Is it true it's bad to chip the 2007 n54?

I hear that the 2007 335i has a smaller intercooler than the 08+ and due to that it has oil cooling issues when it's chipped (ie jb4 etc..) i never thought of this as a problem when i bought my car since i never planned to chip it but... now i'm tossing the idea around and would like to know for sure if it has this problem.

also are there any other things i need to watch out for (disadvantages) to chipping the car? lower gas millage etc..?

thanks!

ps: please excuse my noobness, i really know nothing about engines

i don't think that there is difference between them except the 09+ came with the 7 speed dct option

and the 2011+ came with the n55 engine

Some 07 doesn't come with oil cooler, nothing really is different.

Dct is only available on the 335is.

Some 07's don't have oil coolers. Easy enough to check. Look towards the front of your passenger side wheel well. You should be able to see it if you have one.

All the intercoolers are the same and they all suck. I'd get an aftermarket unit like HPF, ETS, AMS, Helix, etc.

I have an 07

Hey "Cool Asian Kid": Don't listen to anything that person told you.

Mine is a very early 07 model (07/2006 build) 335i. I do have an oil cooler, but that only really helps on sustained hard driving. A few hard pulls on the highway - enough to get to sent straight to jail - will not overheat your engine.

If anything, I would prefer to tune a 2007 over the other years, as has been proven that they carry forged internals which were removed in the later years..... to cut costs.

Yes you will not have any issues. Just keep an eye on your oil temperature if you are running your car hard consistently.

Not to belabor the point, but "chip" is what was done back in the 1990s when you could actually replace the chip containing the engine software, back before OBD-II. So you can't really "chip" an ECU now.

That said, my 2007 is "tuned", it has the stock oil cooler (not for long, though) and there hasn't been any change in the stock intercooler - it's amazingly junky for something BMW engineered for the N54 (or N55 for that matter). I put a 5" ETS on my car, and it makes a big difference. But what's all this about the plugs? Mine are the originals, with 34,000 miles on them, and no problems. They're supposed to be good to 45K miles from what I understand.

No difference in any of the years, a lack of an oil cooler will not make a difference unless you are tracking the car for extended periods of time.

My 5" ETS intercooler will be delivered on Tuesday. I can't wait to get this thing installed.

Just my opinion, but you should steer clear of having a tuned car until you do learn more about engines. There's a sticky at the top of this forum called "The Basics of Tuning and Timing". Happy reading:
