BMW PE or Soundracer ?

Why spend 1800 on a BMW performance exhaust when you can get one of these for only 40 bucks

Isn't that what BMW did with the N20-powered Z4?

.... and on 2013 M5.

Quote:
Behind this marketing term is a fairly simple idea. The new M5 reproduces the car's engine sound via the in-car audio system. In other word, if you're sitting inside the car you not only hear the engine coming from outside, but also an audio track of the engine based on throttle input, speed, and engine revs. As BMW puts it, this makes for better feedback as you hear exactly what the engine is doing. Another obvious benefit is that it allows to change the noise levels based on your driving behaviour as the reproduction by the audio system gets louder and more intense in Sport and Sport+ settings.
If it would be in an Asian brand, we would all be laughing. Lame.

There are some people out there who run those high watt stereo systems you can hear 2 blocks away. Now plug in a soundracer V8 and crank up the volume

I want to buy one just to put it in people's cars and play pranks on them. I'd love to put one in my dad's Mercedes, that'd be hilarious!

although the idea may seems little silly, I think it has some merit to it when it comes down to auditory feedback.

I have stock 328i which I love the fact that the exhaust is not so noisy. I feel like most of the exhaust mods available for 328 are mostly for sound. I would definitely purchase a tuned exhaust, but since this won't be my permanent car, I can't justify spending money into it.

However, whenever I do little spirited driving, I wish it was loud enough to "gauge" the rpm by sound. This is especially useful when rev matching on downshifts, timing my shift according to engine sound instead of guessing or looking at tachometer.

When I had my other cars with exhausts, rev matching came as thing of nature by auditory feedback. I guess I'm too much of purist to use this gadget, but could be useful tool for someone who wants little more feedback from engine besides tach.

Somebody else tested it and said the engine sounds were way off from actual rpm.

here's the sound racer web site:

Here's customer reviews on amazon:

Bottom line: Its a crap shoot if it will actually work in someone's car.
