Turbos Went South...
Getting the death siren even when my oil temp is 230 degrees now... (although its faint).
So I've been putting around in procede N/A mode trying to decide what me next move is going to be. I've found a site that does TD03 rebuilds for cheap, but i can't have my car out of service for that long. How are e-bay turbos? Is my best bet just to surf the for sale section until something pops up? I can do the install myself (best bud owns his own shop), but I'm trying to keep this whole thing under wraps from the wife so I'm wondering if I can take care of it for under 1 grand? Just for kicks... how hard would it be to build my own upgraded snails? I was thinking of picking up some cheapies off e-bay and working a connection I have with a machinist and seeing if I can do my own snail upgrade... |

I'm afraid its not as easy as buying "e-bay turbos" and swapping them out on this car. If it was everyone would be running upgraded turbos. You can try to go that route, but you will be throwing your money away. You may be able to find a used OEM set from another member that upgraded their turbos. That would be your best bet to stay within your budget. If labor is free then you may be able to get away for about a grand.

Tischer has OEM turbos at a reasonable price - check getbmwparts.com.

Thanks guys I'll look into the tischer option.
Honestly though these things are so easy to rebuild why shouldn't I just buy a rebuilt kit and swap out all the bearings/seals for a couple hundred? I mean... the bearings being "cooked" (or otherwise heavily worn) are the cause for the whine correct? Edit - Also, the whine is hardly noticeable at operating temp, but only at 1-2k RPM. You'd only notice it if you're looking for it. Note, however, this isn't the usual turbo spooling noise which I've become quite acquainted with It's definitely the siren, it just isn't quite as bad when they're fully warm. |

I would just rebuild them why spend the extra money if you don't have to.
I am guessing your car is out of warranty?

Are you sure they are done? Cause I've had the "siren" since day 1 out of the dealer and I still maintain full boost, no blue smoke out the exhaust, ETC
I wouldnt count your chickens until they actually hatch. |

jubb,
There is manufacturing defect on some of the turbos on some N54 engine platforms. My friend had both of them replaced under warranty just 2 months ago. I would search around regarding that matter. Then try getting it fixed at the dealer. Good Luck bro. Let us know how it turns out. |

Turbos are supposed to make noise, especially if you don't have the factory air cleaner installed. There's a reason they refer to that assembly as a "silencing" unit If you're building adequate boost and not blowing blue smoke, you don't need new turbos. |

Here's a question....
Has Rob finished with his upgraded turbo project? What do hp/trq numbers look like if so? And how much? Also, does anyone know that the N54 can really handle power numbers in the 500's with stock internals? I remember hearing that these engines come with forged internals, is this correct? If so, how reliable will the higher power be and for how long? I'd be worried about durability.... |
