ticking sound?
car has loud ticking noise coming from engine at idle. is this normal? friend of mine said switching to thicker engine oil would lessen the ticking sound. any input on this would be greatly appreciated!

Hey watch out with the snake oil. I wouldn't run to do anything. These cars do sound like diesels. Can you post a video so we can tell you if its the normal ticking or the turbo waste-gate rattle you are hearing?

I have a ticking sound in mine as well and have taken it to the dealership to be checked. Both the Tech and SA assured me it is completely normal and nothing to worry about. Let me know if they tell you anything different.

I work at a dealer and people commonly ask about the ticking. It's not your valves so please don't change to a different oil.
It is your injectors that make the loud ticking noise. If you run the car with no engine cover it's very loud. If you don't believe me then rev the car to redline and let it drop back down. The ticking will stop until it hits idle because the fuel is cut so it can rev back down. There's really nothing we can do about it and it is nothing to worry about. |

Yes Direct injection does cause ticking no question... our cadillacs, and any of the GM vehicles we sell that have direct injection all have the ticking noise... in fact the cadillac CTS direct injection motors tick louder then the BMW's for sure...at first I was annoyed by it... but now have grown accustomed to it... and the fact that equates to the cars being more powerful and efficient is a good thing.
