Bad Dyno Day with my steptronic.
Ok, Friday evening I had a chance to get my Procede'd car Dyno'd. It was my first time ever and I really didn't know what to expect. I got to the place (found out about it through a local forum member who plans on taking his
6spd there to get it dyno'd aswell) and said i wanted to do some runs. After a while they took my car in, took 15-20 minutes strapping it and plugging it into a computer for a Air/Fuel measurement. They even positioned 3 high speed blowers at the car to assure it had proper conditions. So after all that the car was ready to get some runs. The guy that ran my car, kept pressing the accelerator all the way pass the step, causing my car to downshift. No matter how hard I tried to explain it, he kept doing it. When i finally left and paid, I examined the dyno map and noticed the map started at 3k (which was fine) and ended at 5100rpms. Hello buddy, my car shifts at 6500rpms, which of course was the result of him taking it pass the step of the accelerator. The numbers at the end were kind of weird. Average of 313whp and 420wtq. The low HP is explained by him downshifting at 5100rpms, but the torque showed clearly at 4krpms... which was normal for the dyno run. Still, that high of torque surpised me and leaves me wanting another reading. They used a DynoJet, which is supposed to be more accurate. Either way I plan on doing more runs at ActiveAutowerkes since I live in Miami and they're not more than 10 minutes away... So theres a heads up to you guys with the automatics, make sure to explain to the guy how to properly give the car WOT without downshifting pass the step. Joy Theres a snap I had from my camera phone... I had a bad setting on it so the pic is real small. |

Wow, I would not have paid for the dyno runs.
Those numbers are clearly wrong and if he kept pushing it past the kick-down step, then the dyno results are pointless. Call them up, ask for the owner or manager and ask that they run the car again properly and no additional cost to you. |

yea, I plan on that. I complained about it a few times during the runs. After every run when they would say my HP was that low, and my TQ was that high, I would tell them something was wrong. In total they did like 6 runs. All showing the same... I was really upset about it, but since the owner had left and they already did 6 runs with two different guys, I decided to pay and elave... My map only shows 3 runs even though they did it 6 times...

Yea thats what they did. They did the entire run in 3rd gear. Started the dynograph from 3k rpm, but always manage to hit the kickdown at 5k. It was really annoying... Pressing it all the way down just before the kickdown is what the guy needed to do in order to get WOT. He kept calling my car triptronic... SIGHS

The mistake they made was not turning off the DTC (Press and hold for 5 sec) before getting on the rollers. This is why they had to feather the throttle during the dyno pull. If everything is disabled before the car gets on the dyno, the operator should have no problem going WOT (just before the kickdown) without the car downshifting.

Also, my problem is that they did not realize NOT to press the kickdown...They kept just slamming they're foot down once it reached 5000rpms... Either way, I'll show the Dynograph tomorrow... I plan on taking it to Active, but they use a Mustang Dyno... I was pretty happy with this place since they were using a Dynojet. |

For what its worth, it doesnt matter what dyno you use as long as you use the SAME one for every future dyno. This way you have standardized base numbers for yourself to compare. Sure dynos are different and some show less/more loss than others. But be fair to yourself and use the same one so you can see actual differences.

Wow Joyride, I didnt know you where riding on CSL's. (looks like it).
Anyways, I didnt know AA is down here, let me know, I dont mind going to them, since they deal with BMW's. Even though my car will be easier to dyno since its a six manual. Sounds like its an entire process just to dyno the step. I really want to see what your putting down. My friend with the Audi with chip will also go. PM Me. |

Can you just slide your AT over to Manual mode? That's how i would have done my dyno run. Then you don't have to worry about kick-down or goofy shifting behavior.
