Z4 M engine oversquare?
I noticed the specs on the BMW Z4 M engine show the engine as being "oversquare" but the old engine wasn't...
http://www.bmwusa.com/vehicles/M/z4mcoupe/techdata it's also listed this way in the pdf brochure for download. M3 engine is listed as bore/stroke of 3.43/3.58 and Z4 M engine is listed as bore/stroke of 3.58/3.43 It must be a typo but seems strange they got it wrong on the website and the brochure. Sorry if this has already been discussed, I searched, but found nothing. |

Just a quick question. Why is it a bad thing to have an oversquare engine?

Oversquare is not bad... here's a great article on Wikipedia. "Oversquare" and "Undersquare" each design has advantages/disadvantages...
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Oversquare One interesting thing the article mentions is that all F1 cars are Oversquare. It seems that really high-reving engines benefit from being Oversquare. But I learned some interesting things from that article. I thought it would be cool if they tweaked the M engine. I was thinking about when the engine 1st came out and it was having some technical problems... I thought this might be to address that problem. But it must simply be a typo. Again... it's sure strange they made a typo on the website and in the brochure. |

Just found a 2005 M3 user's manual.
Found the same thing you did. The M supplement to the Z4 Manual doesn't list bore and stroke so I'm not sure what to tell you Last edited by Dammmittt; 05-07-2007 at 03:47 PM.. Reason: I'm retarded |
