Dinan Stage 2

Dinan stage 2 is just a software update. Did Apple charge extra for iOS5?When I first got my Dinan stage 1, I was wondering what everyone was raving about on the forums. I kept asking myself where is all this power? First gear, not sure maybe a little stronger, second gear, the same, third gear, not yet, ......wait, 3000rpm...... Ok here it is! I thought there was something wrong with my tune. Several reflashes and many calls to dinan and it was the same. Dinan denied that there was any problem with the tune. They never admitted that the tune didn't make full power in the first two gears.
They advertised their ecu flash making 570 lbs of torque. When they charged you $3000 (- discount for some) Did they tell you it doesn't make that kind of power until 3rd gear?
I did not expect this from a company that takes pride in their reputation.
Since I'm already knee deep and invested, I did pay for the Stage 2 update, but think it should have been handled differently.
To their credit, Dinan did wave the labor charges for my stage2 and they
do offer a revised stage 1 for free to people who had the early stage 1 tune (they claim full power in all gears in this revised tune)Stage 2 is really about the same in the top 6 gears. Power comes in maybe about 500 rpm earlier. In the first two gears, you can really feel the difference because full power is now available. Apparently, they removed the torque limiters that BMW had placed in those 2 gears for safety.

I was dissappointed with my Stage 1 also. However, I am pleased with Stage 2 as it feels much improved, especially in first two gears. I was considering selling my car prior to getting the stage 2 but now its a keeper.

I would like to know this also. Anyone have any measured times?

My guess is 4.5 seconds with the iX but that's just my seat of the pants guestimate.

Anyone have any transmission concerns with the 550i xDrive? I tempted to do the Dinan upgrade, but don't want to create issues.

If you search other forums you will find an F10 6 speed manual with Dinan S2 that recently ran the 1/4 mile in 12.99 sec at 112.95 mph. (1/8 mile was 8.58 sec at 88.76 mph). Breaking into the high 12's is impressive for a vehicle of this weight with only a tune.

I have a F10 550i that ran 12.4 @ 110mph with only stage 1. I have stage 2 and the exhaust cut-outs now but have not ran it with the new upgrades. 12.99 is pretty bad.....

Im guessing I should be able to break into the high 11s....

what is there to be concerned about? Dinan provides full warranty for up to 4years?????

From Dinan's website:

The Authorized Dinan Dealer will, without charge for parts or labor, repair or replace the defective Dinan component(s), as well as any original vehicle manufacturer’s component(s) that may have been directly affected by a Dinan component, using new or authorized remanufactured parts.

I forgot about your earlier post

The 6speed had traction problems causing slow 60' times (2.155). His MPH at 113mph is headed in the right direction.

Are the tracks in your area closed for the season?

That was me - your car is AWD with a slushbox and performance tires, mine is RWD with a 6MT and stock RFTs. Not exactly apples to apples comparison - you are getting lower ETs because your car allows for better launches. Look at the difference in 60' times.

You won't hit 11's, but you may be able to shave a tenth off your time. Someone else has done multiple passes with your set up and just Dinan S2 and got very consistent ETs around 12.5.

ok so your saying there is no difference between stage 1 and 2 and somehow im going to gain some time by putting in stage 2 and an exhaust????

Stage 2 and an exhaust has made a very noticable difference and my guess, between the two are easily worth a .3-.4sec savings especially that I dont have launching issues with the 1st and 2nd gear modification.

Even if not high 11s, most likely low 12s NOT mid 12s....I was at 12.485 stage1 and the temp was 70 or 75 degrees with a little more than a 1/4 tank of gas....If I can get to the track this weekend, it will be 40-50 degrees with 3-4 gallons of gas....big difference....we will see and I will post if the track is open one more time before the season closes....If not, early spring it is....

I have no official times but I raced against my friends 2010 merc E63. In sport+ from first gear. I walked away from him easily bec my traction controll gives me just the right amount of wheel spin and his TC was cutting in too aggressively slowing him down.
Later on we ran from about 60 to about 120-130. He got a slight jump on me by one wheel lenght (dont know he may have stepped on the pedal slightly sooner but that engine has better throttle response) we stayed neck to neck the whole way.

Also went against a 2009 vette. Not a Zo6, stock engine rental car. from a rolling start of about 10 mph i walked away from him by about 1-2 car lenghts. after he gained traction he stayed at that same 1-2 car lengths, did not gain or loose any ground to about 80 where we had to back off. he could not believe it! The vette was only a one time race, not like the E 63 where we tried many different times to ensure consistant resuls.

BTW my plastic engine cover is turning yellow ish in color as a result of extra heat from the turbos which reside just below between the cylinder banks.
I'm considering removing the cover but need to check first with dinnan. want to make sure this will not cause another problem.

Any one had experienced the same with their tuned car?

The biggest improvements in stage2 are drivability and power under 3k rpm - how long are you under 3k rpm in the qtr? You aren't going to gain more than a few whp with an exhaust, not enough to improve by .4 seconds.

My guess is you hit 12.39-12.41, but would be happy to be proven wrong!

Good luck!

Hopefully the temps stay warm enough. I went to the track at the end of the season last year in my 335xi with summer tires and could not find traction. Would spin all 4 tires and had to let off to get moving.
