2000 RPM Drone Thread

I have a 335i Sedan and want the power/sound from the exhaust but can't deal with the drone some of the systems out there make at just over 2000 rpm/60mph in 6th gear (drive on the highway a lot)

Could people post some vids of cruising at 60mph in 6th to try and help? There are a lot of videos out there at WOT but very few at this area so it's hard to judge this aspect of the system (which is very imporant to me).

Thank you very much for your time and help!

Mine drones at 2700 ish, but there isn't much you can do it about it. You want aftermarket you're going to have to deal with some drone somewhere, you gotta pay to play.

Check out side branch resonators, aka helmholtz resonance canisters, aka 1/4 wavelength canisters. Lots of math but they seem to really work. My benchmade proper exhaust is getting these added soon.

Any exhuast on the 6AT will most likely drone. I noticed some drone with the stock exhuast (even before my catless downpipes when i had the stock ones) at around 1900ish rpms. On 6mt cars, some exhuast systems have been reported to not drone in cruising range rpms at all.

All you drone sissies are such a massive turnoff in the BMW community. Your cup of espresso needs a perfect leaf pattern. Your local BMW dealer needs to have a free breakfast cafe. Service attendants need to open the door for you and wipe your ass on the way out. Your IPhone 4S and IPad 2 need to be delivered on the exact release date. Heaven forbid an aftermarket exhaust make noise while cruising.

Even my AE w/ HFC's has some light drone around 2K RPM but nowhere near as much as other exhausts I've tried.

Would people mind posting exhaust vids at 2k? I've made my own actually and the drone is awful at 60... silent at 75-80 both in 6th gear. Funny boom mentioned Helmholz res's... mine has two big H-Res's (one for each side) and it's way better but not gone. Might have to buck up and order a good microphone b/c the one I measured with must not have git the right freq or my calcs are slightly off at the moment... right now I'm getting about 117hz at 2k w/ the cruze on in 6th.

If people wouldn't mind posting vids cruising (with cruise set) at 60mph auto or manual I'd appreciate it!

As far as the "dealing with it"... I have a RB swapped Caged S13 with no interior for that purpose, I really want my 335 to be as quiet as it was with the "golf tee mod" on the highway and to scream when I get in it! Car's fun with the Cobb and exhaust... but I don't really enjoy driving it on the highway, which is a good part of my drive to work.... I'll figure it out, it's only time and money right? haha

This is coming from a guy that started the threads "N54 Intake Sound Board" and "Why are our turbos so quiet?".

Your Redbull needs bigger wings. Your local BMW dealer needs to have their own custom-build department in their bay for you. Service advisers should already know what you're coming in for before you call. Your flip phone should never interrupt you while you're in your car. God forbid our aftermarket intakes and turbos sound like they belong in a German car and not a Japanese or American car.

Lol some good laughs in this thread!

Drone on an exhaust is very difficult to get rid of. Try high flow cats

AE Catless + AR Catless in my 6MT. Very mild drone at about 2100 rpms and ONLY in high gear. The car sounds amazing both under WOT and during cruising on highway. I've been driving it like that for over 2 years now and have taken multiple long distance trips. No problems with droning whatsoever.

Define quiet? We'll all have a different explanation. To me AE is borderline too loud, but someone with younger ears might not think that. IMO my AE AR drones slightly at 60 mph. All exhausts will, just depends how tolerant you are.

CPE exhaust with x-pipe right after connection of DPs and then custom welded vibrant resonators (1792) to the midpipes...Car is very stock like in sound which alot of people including myself love...It has MINIMAL drone and it was after my resonator install but I also think the placement of the x-pipe has alot to do with it...

I have AA exhaust, and there is a drone. It's very noticeable. It bothered me at first. Not so much now.

+1
There was someone on another thread that mentioned their AR + AE (w/ 6MT) was so quiet at highway cruising it sounded like OEM. I find mine to be borderline too loud (sounds like there is a mid-range sub-woofer cranked up in the car) and definitely louder tham OEM, and I only have the AE. Like others say above, I guess people have different opinions on drone.

BMW Performance Exhaust is the most drone free setup by far that I have heard
