That is what a tune is for and BMW needs to sell to Power Kit as they do now. It won't be any different as now. There might be an IS model a year or two out.

Since the E46 and E90 rolled out with carry over motors, I'm not surprised. I'd suspect they'll follow the usual trend of updating motors two years in, or when the coupe/convertible comes out.
With 90 pounds less weight, they did effectively increase power though. |

i really don't think we're going to see much more power coming out of the regular n55 engine. I recall reading something a long time ago that the 3.0l i6 is pretty much maxed out and bmw pushed it a little furhter by introduing the turbos. The car is already doing 0-60 in 5.4 secs which is way more than 90% of people that own a 335 can handle.
If you'll notice, they massaged the engine to now produce 306 hp at the expense of a little bit of torque. This is just marketing as everybody knows the rule of thumb. You buy hp but drive torque so by saying that the car now makes 306hp, they can advertise it as saying that the engine now produces more power. Also, note the 306hp that they massaged the engine to also happens to be the same as one of their competitors, the IS350. So I don't think they're too concerned with the hp because they, along with all of the other car manufacturers, are more concerned with the upcoming CAFE standards. That's why you see BMW pushing this efficiency thing from low rolling resistance tires to extremely low cod to reduced weight. That's why BMW now has an in-house carbon fiber plant because I'm guessing that's where they're going to focus their performance in the near future. More efficient engines and reduced weight and not increased power.

I don't think you're ever going to see much more power out of any company's mid-range gasoline engine and keep semi-decent fuel economy.
10 years from now whatever the mid-model 3-series will probably be still putting out not much more than 306hp or whatever. The technology is peaked. It will be much lighter, though. electric motors on the other hand... this is the future. |

What always puzzled me is how did Toyota made a 320HP 3.0L Twin Turbo Supra and BMW can't seem to to the same 20 years letter on a standard trim car with these technologies which weren't used in 1993.
-Variable Valve Timing -Direct Injection -Coil on Plug -Variable Vane Turbo Somehow German engineering is 20 year behind and still catching up to last millennium. Art Quote:

There also isn't really a reason for BMW to give much more power, the car is fast as is and for those who want more there's the M3. |

Regardless of when these engines debut, there will most surely be a power bump across the 3/4 series range when the F32 arrives. |

According to the just posted catalog, the new 335i is only 25kg lighter than the previous 335i (1585kg vs. 1610kg EU unladen weight). The power figure is identical, the N55 was not "massaged" to 306hp, that is just the european power figure, the N54 had 306hp from 2006.
Did I expect more power from the 335i ? Of course yes. The new Active Hybrid 3 with 340hp will be quite a lot heavier due to the electric engine and battery so I don't think it will be a performance upgrade option. A model with like 360hp would have been perfect to entice the current 335i owners to upgrade without paying like 25.000 euro more for the M3. Right now, I don't have any reason to upgrade, but I wanted to have these reasons !

Like they did with the E46 to E90\E92 transition, the intro year carries over the same engine. By the time the coupe hits, there will be new engines to go with that. Lets wait and see. But more or not, I don't think am upgrading to the next 3 series for the first time in last 15yrs, I would like to skip and go straight ti a Turbo M3. My car is tuned and got more power than I ever imagined I could have out of a 3 series. Totally exceeded my expectations and wants. Now and M3 Turbo may be the only logical car to buy and remain stock. There is no going back now or anything else feels wimpy coming from my current E92.

How much more power do we really need from the 335i? It is plenty fast as it is IMO, more than 90% of the drivers need. The current 335i is as fast as or even faster than some older generation M3s (stock).
I would much rather see BMW make the car lighter, say at around 3300lbs. I'm happy that the F30 is lighter than the E90, which according to many magazines was getting a 5.0sec 0-60mph at least. So the F30 should be good for a slightly better acceleration time. That is plenty fast, really. |
