finally got a new windshield
it took my insurance a month to order it  ..the guy came over and did it all at my house in like 30mins overall it came out pretty damn clean and he did a good job....it takes a day for the glue to cure and i cant drive with the windows down for 3 days...i was happy to see it was a OEM windshield and not some aftermarket crap...i was kinda of nervous when i asked him if he ever did a bmw and said no but i guess theres a first time for everyone....

What happened to the you're windshield? Mine's gonna need replacing soon... It got sandblasted (along with the rest of my car) driving through a freak sand storm (reminded me of the movie Mummy)....

Safelite did my 94 525i (with PPG glass) and used a glue that cures very quickly. As soon as the guy packed up, I could drive the car underwater with the windows and roof open.

I just had my Maxima done and tried to get OEM and couldn't because the car was too old. I was told that with BMW's you will get an OEM instead of settling for something else. I had a chance to talk with the installer and asked him what the difference between the glass I was getting and OEM. His response was " every glass has to meet certain specs and comply with industry standards so the SAFELITE glass is only different because it does not have Nissan on it" Just thought I'd share some info. Take it for what its worth.

Someone mentioned this very thing to me the other day. That BMW glass is more expensive b/c of the BMW logo and that there isn't any difference between theirs and normal auto glass...old guy goin on about how expensive it was, etc.
Even so, I would still have BMW glass put in. |

Ditto on the Nissan, I think an OEM is $900 and insurance will not pay for it. A Nissan dealer even told me that they'd charge me $900, and even they will just have an auto glass place put replacement glass in, so just go there....
Why OEM with BMW? Is it the rain sensor? I'd prefer BMW glass or Sekurit or whatever it is...I hope they don't scratch off the logo when they do my inspection in Dec.! |

Having mine replaced as we speak ....... glass itself is BMW OEM, only $350 at dealer .......... I was surpised it was that reasonable, expected State Farm to have a fit with $1000's worth of glass ....... no issues.....we'll see how they do with the install.

My stealership wanted to charge me a grand for a 2 inch crack at the top and I was able to find a cheaper price across the street. $500 for glass and $500 for install. I told them they were smoking crack since I had just priced the glass at the parts dept and used myt BMWCCA membership and was quoted about $350. Membership does have its benefits! I decided not to change it and just wait for another rock to crack it enough and have my insurance pay for it with no out-of-pocket expenses.

Automotive glass does have to meet minimum industry requirements. Some cars like Lexus and MB, exceed the minimum quite a bit. Their glass is thicker for increased sound isolation. Not sure what BMW's story is. Unfortunately, glass specs are not required to be available. I've had many windshields replaced and always opt for OEM. I have never had a problem with insurance since they're suppose to replace with the same. Your mileage may vary.
