PDC and iDrive question
Ok so now that I have about 800 miles on my car I still don't see how the graphic on the iDrive screen is used when you back up. I mean does anyone NOT look back when they are backing up???? Why not put the graphic on a screen above the back window where you are looking when you back up?

because you will be concentrating on the screen and not looking out the windows. :dunno:
I usually set the car straight into the spot i want, then back up via the guidance of the graphic. |

True, but think of it as an enhancement to PDC that folks without iDrive don't have. If you don't have iDrive, then you just get audible beeps to warn you of nearby objects. We have the option of also being able to look at the screen.
I'll give you a perfect example - say you're backing into a spot in a parking garage, and there is a concrete half-wall behind you. You cannot see it through the rear window and the side mirrors make it difficult to judge proximity. You can back to within a couple of feet by sight, then look at the display to inch back until you're close... but not too close.

I look back but I pay close attention to the screen when I am inching close to my garage wall or whatever is behind me.... After you use it for a while you will get use to it.

I know what you mean...I find it fine on my screen when backing out of my garage at home and not hitting my nieghboors trash cans...but when parking in other unfamiliar spots you absolutly need to look behind (kinda useless)
My buddy just got a 2008 Porsche Cayenne with the porsche PDC option and sure enough, they have lights (and beeping) mounted in a small box type (green through red) on the very front of the dash (for front PDC-duh) and have the second box on back roof of headliner on top of the rear seat headrests that you can see perfectly as looking backwards as cleaner points out it should be (quite well thought out by Porsche) |

I actually would find Front PDC MUCH more useful than rear It's hard to judge clearances up front and would be nice to have when snuggling into a parking spot or trying not to hit a curb.
