Aren't they the same engines except for intake manifolds?

No IIRC, the N52 is the magnesium block, single stage intake, with Valvetronic.
The N53 is an aluminum direct injected, three stage intake, without valvetronic. EDIT: Also realoem.com shows they use different exhausts. |

N53 is also magnesium/aluminum block (it’s probably the same block) but it has different cylinder head with direct fuel injection and no valvetronic. There are two different intake manifolds (325 – single stage, 330 – 3 stage). Exhaust is slightly different too. You can compare them on realoem.com or bmwfans.info.
