I remember seeing a video by Megs in regards to "working with the lines" aka "back and forth"
Generally speaking, I tend to do the back and forth motion. |

Yup - in the direction of airflow when the car is in motion. I know, for me personally, it is very hard to do after 20+ years of circles. Muscle memory wants me to continually go in circles. I find it most difficult when removing wax not to fall back into the circular motion.

left to right, up and down
or get a pcxp and simplify your life! lol I havent hand waxed a car in like two years up until the other day when I tried out HD Nitro Seal. To be honest, my arms killed me at the end of two rounds (two part sealant - but supposed to last a long time, and it does look pretty damn good) |

Eric,
Just received a PCXP - haven't used it yet. Is there an instance when hand application is better...polish or wax? I've read certain things where some say they apply LSP by hand over powered application. Thanks for the advice.

Not for me! get a blue pad and your liquid wax and you are set!
if using a carnuba, you can apply it with a PC, you just have to use the applicator to get it from the tub to the pad. With a machine, you can get more covered faster with thinner coverage (thats what you want, not thicker). I can get around a whole M3 top to bottom with BFWD, a blue pad, and a PC in about 4-5 minutes....try doing that by hand! I havent heard of a carnuba paste that cant be applied by PC, but I am not 100% certain on that. Oh and polishing by hand vs polishing by machine...you are wasting your time doing it by hand! |

For paste waxes I picked up an artist's putty knife, it's metal on a wood handle with an angled head, I just spread the wax on the pad that way like buttering bread. The thing I got was at a Michael's craft store while with the GF. It was less than $2 if memory serves.
Oh and by machine speed 3 on my PCXP, I think slow is better for glazes and waxes but I'll let the pro's confirm that. |

never really thought about doing paste wax with a PCXP. I think I'll stick with hand application though, my body may regret it the next day, I find it to be fairly peaceful. It's like yoga, except instead of a good looking body, I have a good looking car.

dday, Bobble, Thanks for the info. I'm excited to learn the PCxp. Sounds much better than by hand as I've been doing it for decades.

Same here! I find it really relaxing and calming to spend a good hour or two on a nice afternoon doing a detailing, and it feels like I'm accomplishing more than just throwing a machine on for 6 mins. |

I just did my first "detail" with my cars this past weekend all by hand. I applied CG EZ Creme Glaze and BWFD with yellow foam applicator pads going back and forth with the direction of airflow. It was really rewarding, and incredibly time consuming. With that said, I cannot absolutely wait to get a PC.

It's important to note Eric said "Gold" and not "Yellow" above.
Someone above also asked if circular motions were ever needed, and I'd like to point out that only when polishing by hand (often used on hard to reach areas). Circular motions when polishing allow for a more uniform surface material removal which is exactly what you want. When applying professional grade protection products that have no abrasives, circular motions are not needed as you shouldn't be removing any clear-coat. |
