Having an exhaust on an automatic?
Is it being a poser or weird for having an exhaust on a car that is automatic? Just had a discussion with a friend and he claims when you hear an exhaust it usually comes from a manual car. Thoughts?

depends on the car...
We all drive bimmers here... Manual and Semi-Automatic transmissions 1. I like the sound of the exhaust either way, it's going to sound the same just not shift the same way 2. I constantly drive through stop-n-go traffic near seattle, this is no good for manual cars - very annoying (yes, i drive an Auto with a muffler and res delete) 3. Most cars that are auto do sound like shit, but it's about the car you drive (you'd expect a civic with an exhaust to be a manual, but you can't get the new ferrari's, lamborghini's, or bentleys in manual, they're all 7-speed Semi-Auto) - thinking "bottom of the scrap vs the top of the food chain" |

I'm forced to admit that I've never hung out on a car enthusiast forum with as much Automatic drivers like e90post.
For all other makes, the MT are always the most popular for real enthusiasts. But for bimmers, its different. And to answer your question, I'm sold to the MT but I admit having a family car in the past that was an AT and was also modded. I went as far as modding goes with this car (Exhaust, catless, intake and headers) but you can mod an AT the same way you mod an MT. For an MT, you gain some ponnies modding since your gains are at high rpms (6k+ rpm) and for the AT, you never go that high, so you really dont benefit from the mods. This is why BMW's are different since there is a M mode on the automatic which I guess (never took a ride in one; so I honestly dont know) is taking the gears to higher rpms; thus giving some very very minor gains. In the end, its all about your expectations; do you want sound? Or some "holy-crap"iness? In my book, all car enthusiasts are posers lol. Some more then others, but we all have something to show somewhere.

lol wtheck?
We drive BMW's, not some shitty Neon or Civic. The only reason you only hear exhausts on those cars in manual form is because the lower automatic trims are slow as fuck.

Auto and an exhaust is fine - who cares if anyone thinks it's poserish!

My shitty Civic would have SMOKED my current e90. And smoked is a very poor word in this situation. Dont compare apples and oranges please. In fact, I miss it sometimes. Not very often tho

If that's true, then an exhaust for the Civic would be appropriate. It's the pretense of speed that I'm referring to - slow cars do not need exhausts.

A true enthusiast never judge a book by its cover.
Otherwise you end up depressing wondering WHY O WHY i've just been smoked by a shitty japanese car.

Early summer, I was smoked... and smoked wasnt fast enough since I didnt even see any smoke... by a mazda 3 at the drag strip.
But the dude swapped a mazdaspeed engine, tranny and went aftermarket F/I. (Cant remember if it was SC or TC) The dude was getting something like 350whp from this setup and other then the burnt bumpers, you couldnt tell anything about it. Stockies all around. I think even a M3 couldnt have won that race. On the top of it, his shifting was right on spot. I watched another race he did and his shifting was so on spot that he almost sounded like a DCT.

I don't have gripes with 6 cylinder or higher automatic with exhaust....
4banger automatic with exhaust is the worst sound a car can make....

Benzo: I've saw a smart with an 1100cc motorcycle engine swap. The guy didnt want to get into details about the how's and why's, but damn that looked fun to drive.
Would get killer results on the dyno!

Not everyone can throw down $45k on a car because it's fast. I paid $26k for my 325 and i'm slowly but surely modding it for the extra gains. Eventually when i run out of engine mods and cosmetics, i'll throw a supercharger kit into and then it'll be 'fast'. So, in retrospect, i do what i can afford at the time
