Speaker Upgrade

Hi. I want to upgrade my System for better sound quality. I will probably start with changing out the front speakers for some top of the line Alpine's and if I want more later, Ill do the same with the rear speakers. Is this the correct route to take for better sound quality? Also, what size are the front speakers in the doors, are they split speakers and are they an easy swap with aftermarkets?

Thanks...

What works depends on what you start out with

There are three basic systems
http://www.e90post.com/forums/attach...2&d=1266451970
You need to identify which you have .
If you have the base system or hi fi system adding speakers won't help much because the amplification is limited.
Also the base system requires a processor to flatten the head outputs.
There are a limited number of speakers that fit the coupe has extra shallow doors , the 4 door and wagon aren't quite as bad.

Gee what a nightmare to change a few speakers!
I think I have the basic because I definitly dont have the high end one, and Ive never noticed any tweeters anywhere.

I did learn something though. I had no idea I had woofers under the seats so thats cool.

So if I just change the 2 front speakers I need a processor? Where does that go, what does it do and how much do they cost approximately? What would happen if I wire new speakers up without a processor?

You only have 12 watts

Right now you only have head unit power of 12 watts RMS or less per side
and better speakers require more power so your volume will be reduced and you will
have a boosted high frequency due to the factory eq curve see the following threads

http://www.e90post.com/forums/showth...ighlight=graph
read #25 in the above thread for technics low cost system suggestion.
Although I'm not sure it works since it was based on recoding the head unit for
flat output something I believe was never achieved.

http://www.e90post.com/forums/showthread.php?t=439211

The cheaper upgrade for this system consists
of a JL cleansweep processor to flatten the head unit output a 4 or 6 channel
amp speakers from the list mentioned for the fronts and underseats
a Technic Harness suited for the base system. amp and processor go in the trunk and trunk
subfloor area.

Cost in the US for something like this runs 1k US to 1.5 k US (in parts). I know in Europe they don't seem to get Electronics as cheap or have access to the same brands. I have no idea of what it is in Australia.

Vp Electricty in the above post sells kits for this system they have all the
necessary parts to install and come prewired and tuned.

You don't want to change the head unit either because it is integrated
with the car electronics and has side effects.
If you do read the following.
When changing the Head Unit the original should be mounted in the trunk
to retain the ability of the BMW programmer to be able to service the car.
The rest of the problems are described in the link.
