How do I screw in the velcro discs for the floor mats? Pls help!
I've been driving the MT for about a month now and today, my carpet started to creep up and caught the clutch couple of times. I think this can be potentially dangerous and it is irritating.
So I looked at my floor mats closely and there were velcro discs that can be screwed on to the floor. But when I tried to screw it in, it went no where... I couldn't even make a hole!! So I did some "search" but didn't find any answers... can anyone tell me how I should screw this in properly? Thank you...

I think you have to drill.

Put it on the floor where you want it. Hit it with your hand to make a hole. Start turning clockwise and push down while doing so. It's a self tapping screw. You don't have to drill.

The real question is why didn't your dealer do this for you?

I had the same issue so I used an awl to poke through the carpet. once you've poked the holes in the carpet it's really easy to screw them in. A drill sounds like overkill. You just need to poke a little hole in the carpet not drill into the floor pan.

When you ask for the mats after the fact they usually just throw them in the trunk, velcro circles and all. Most of the cars I prep come that way.

I have't got my E93 yet but in my E60 there are two small slots in the carpet just in front of each front seat. There are white plastic sockets underneath that will receive the discs and they lock after you twist them 90 degrees clockwise. My winter rubber mats come with hooks that screw into the same slots.

Don't get too excited and jam the screw into the floor too hard. You don't want to hurt yourself or break the pointy screwy thing on the other side haha.

I ordered my mats separately and they came with a paper template to find the proper spot for push-and-screw-in.

The instructions on the paper template for the mats suggest using an awl to poke a hole into which the screw will go. Put the template where it says, push the awl through the template and the carpet, then screw the disc down (remove the awl first). Once both discs are in, tear off the template.

Making a small hole with something makes screwing in the velcro holders a lot easier

Once you line up and happy with the location of the velcro, poke a hole, then line up the pointy plastic screw on the velcro with the hole you just made and start screwing/turning it and it will screw onto the carpet. GL.

I actually used a 50p coin to turn the screw. It fit better than a quarter.

I just used the disk itself to make a hole--worked fine for me.

The OEM mats come with four little black plastic disks that have a screw attached to the bottom. 2 each for your front two mats. On the top side of the disk is a plastic pattern similar to velcro--this is what the bottom of your mat attaches to so it will stay in place while you are driving. The screw is inserted into through the carpet and then twisted to keep the disk, and ultimately your mat, in place.

I drilled a very thin pilot hole. It screws in real nice after that..

My girlfriend's dealer just threw the mats in the car without the disk... Now her friggin' carpet folds under the brake pedal. I decided to swap the two front mats for the rubber all seasons with the current hooking disks.

I first calculated the angle of the disc relative to the driving position and pedals. I then triangulated their position by going outside and noon and putting a 2 foot piece of plywood with a hole in the middle on the windhshield, the dot of sunlight that hit the carpet told me exactly where to drill (using a hammer drill and steel drill bit, of course), it also revealed the location of the Ark....
Seriously, this isn't that complicated. Hit it with your hand and turn. |
