open intake, and a free-er flowing exhaust will make a sound difference, but my 330i didn't sound all that good stock...
Unless you're referring to an e46. Then I can't say I know what they sound like.

it changes the tone a little, more deeper, less high pitch wine.
never heard the e46 330i zhp sounds so couldnt tell how it compares. If you have Pre-LCI model, you can also remove the sound insulation attached to the hood. My LCI sounds better compare to friends Pre LCI model. |

Change is marginal. However, as per the above post you do get a deeper tone in the engine and you can definitely hear it from inside the cabin.

There is a pretty big change past 6000 rpm. I actually use it as an easy way to time shifts. It's a lot louder throughout the whole rpm range outside the car though.
