Talking JL audio W7's

hey everyone,

im a bass head and wanted crazy bass, problem is i have a e90 3 series...

not to worry i went ahead and installed 2 w6 jl audio 12's running 1000.1/v2 jl amp.

problem was i could hardly hear it.

i ripped that install out and am now happy with 2 12 w7's running 2 1000.1/v2 jl amps. i know several people on the forum have had trouble creating a box that sounds good in our vehicles due to the sealed trunk and limited space. i went with a slot ported box tuned to about 34hz

both my installs can be seen on my cardomain

page 2 for my current install and page 3 for my previous

note: i still need to make trim panels and clean it up a bit so right now its just for pure sound, i will make trim panels similar to those of my previous install

post if you have any questions!

you could hardly hear 2 12" JL W6's? haha it's not your sound system, it's your hearing.

I'm sure those W7's sound crazy. The 3 series is not a large car.

hahaha i know it sounds odd but heres the reason, the W6s as seen in the photos were firing into the trunk with hardly any airspace between the box and the frame of the car. the sealed trunk on the Bimmer prevented about 60-70% of volume reaching the cabin. i probably should have just flipped the w6s firing into the cabin but got a great deal on the w7s

as for the size of this car (because this amazed me) when your dealing with spl and subs that move air like w7s (4 inches of excursion!) the low bass sine waves are around 10-15 feet in length, so you really want an suv to run them. they would be much louder in something like an x5, but the 3 series isint that bad. wave leaves the face of the sub, hits the windshield and bounces back to abount 6-10 inches behind the headrest (where spl is at its peak)

ill post a video up soon!

anyone else got W7'S in the 3? i think i might be the first

Man so are our trunks really that sealed from the factory? I am in the process of building a single 12w3v3 in a sealed enclosure. Will run it at 500w RMS. I'm not a bass junkie but just want to complement the logic 7 system a bit more. Guessing I should scrap my idea of wrapping the trunk lid in dynamat?

Sick setup btw!

the simple answer is yes, now there are ways around it. i would not bother dynamiting your trunk, a w3 wont move that much air just give you a nice bit of bass. there are a few ways to get around this. keep the rear armrest down, you would be amazed when i have the w7s on 80% volume with the rear seat up spl is 20% of what its capable of. second that armrest comes down its 75-80% volume and with the full seat down your bangin! i would recommend firing your sub into the cabin, maybe in a ported enclosure (through the armrest). if your willing to cut into your rear deck and put a black mesh covering over it to get that bass into the car, by all means go with a sealed enclosure firing towards the trunk. (i didnt want to do this because i wanted to be able to remove the system to stock incase i ever sell the car). i have no dynamat believe it or not, and yes the car does rattle slightly from the outside but people cant believe i have no sound deadining. ive heard systems running 1000 watts with the whole trunk dynamated that rattle twice as much as our bimmers. they do a really good job from the factory.

hope it helps!

Whoever thinks they need two 12s to achieve decent bass inside the cabin needs to audition a single 10 or 12 in a properly designed and built corner-loaded enclosure. I am running a single 10W6 on 500W and it is louder than the two 12" Infinity Perfects I used to run in a box about half the size of the trunk and with 1000W of power. Also, the bass is the most musical I have ever had it, and there are ZERO trunk rattles.

Wow jwise, you must love your bass loud and resonant.

I agree you need a bit of travel distance to reach the higher levels of bass.

However, I personally like the really tight sound of a nice sealed enclosure. I never liked porting.

I haven't put the system in the 3, but it still boggles my mind that the w6's aren't enough.

had i have fired them into the cabin, im sure they would have been, but the deal presented itself. the w7 hits lows that i never thought were audible before!

you do realize those subs are not even in a box, not to mention that an 8 w7 would hit harder....

Really.....

The subs have been changed from Image Dynamics IDQ 15's to Arc Audio Arc15 v2. And if you truly believe that 8W7 will hit harder than 2 15's in a well done IB system, well then you enjoy your W7 subs and no trunk space and have a nice day :-D

Yes the 8w7 will push more air btw.

Why not run a single 13w7 ?

I used to run that with a 1000w JL
In a factory JL box.
Hit as hard as the 4 matt 12s I had before.
a single 13 would have been fine, but the deal i scored was too good to pass up. and ya this guy has no idea what he's talking about. hes using the seatback as part of the box. unless your creating an spl setup in which your playing a burp and not music that is the most ridiculous thing i have ever seen!

look im not trying to start an argument here, but really, whoever designed your setup and thought it would be ideal is high, and im wondering where i can get some of what ever there smoking cuz it sure seems to be some goooood sheeeaaattt. but back to your subs

yes, you do have trunkspace, so throw a briefcase in there and everytime you hit the breaks let it puncture the subs. i dont need trunkspace, i have a back seat, and i rarely take passengers. your comparing arc audio 15's to jl w7 12's. there is no comparison, im no jl fanboy, ive run several different subs in the past from Orion HCCA, to FI Btl, to kicker l7s and even DC Audio.

the overall sq and spl you get from the W7 is unlike anything else ive heard thus far, yes there are subs that our louder, and yes there are subs that offer better SQ but for the space i had to work with the box is tuned perfectly, built to the right specs, and can guarantee you tears your system apart.

i posted this thread to help others out, i dont need any haters. happy listening!

awesome man, 12s are as big as you need w7s, especially if you have 2 of them, the best advice i can give you would be to sell the 500 watt amps and the cap and run 1000 watts to each sub and throw in a kinetik or yellow top battery.

im sure it sounds great but the w7s are hungry for more power!!

hope the setup goes well, what kind of work are you thinking of doing?

Everyone that's putting down TMR's setup must not know a thing about infinite baffle. And also I saw someone mentioned cutting the rear deck. It will do absolutely nothing I doubt any of the "audio experts" here will believe me but thats fine try it for yourself.

well when i had them in my Gti i blew the rear window that that set up and had to get plexiglass rear window

ill prob keep the 500/1's i like them a lot...would you suggest getting a yellow top battery in addition to my car battery so i dont drain all the power?? and ill prob switch the 5 farad cap and go with a 1 farad, should be more then enough...i want to do something flat where the speakers are facing the trunk, and have the port hole going to the seats, and have a false bottom with a plexiglass window for my amps so you can see them...something like that...what do you think would look good??

The designer of my IB system must have been high. Must have been crazy. They dont know what they are doing. I mean, they only did develop all Image dynamics Speakers. I mean... what was he thinking. Eric and Matt are getting a hell of a laugh from this post.

I do like the W7 subs. The in home W7 subs are sick. My biggest complaint with W7's in a car is weight. Those things are stupid heavy. I wanted clean powerful bass with as little weight as possible. My whole system so far with 4 amps, 2 15's, the enclosure, the 5x7's and horns all weigh in a little under 100lbs.

All i was trying to say is, you can have powerful bass 146db when needed and still have a trunk.
