modify on-board computer to display gear # ?

just wondering if anyone with a manual transmission modified the on-board computer to display which gear you were in. like the on-board computer does for automatic transmission e9*s, during steptronic shifting? probably not possible, but would be sweet!!!

ok don't flame me, i realize you can look down at the shifter or you should know by engine sound/RPMs what gear you are in.

Sounds cool, I am pretty sure it is not easy at all.

Interesting idea, I don't think it would take much to have this from factory, but I don't think it's an easy mod by any means.

Pretty much if you have to preface a post with this or even have this statement in a post, you shouldnt have made that post in the first place. This means you already know the answer.

Its one thing on a motorcycle, but when you CAN look down or even just feel the shifter, this thought is just retarted.

I would say it says more about the juvenile responses often given on this forum by those who believe they are the end all and be all of BMW knowledge.

For example, this ↑.

FWIW, I have also thought this might be a useful bit of info on the dash.

Very easy mod. Four step DIY:

1. Sell BMW 335.

2. Buy Ferrari 430:

3. Enjoy having your gear in the instrument cluster!!

4. Let me take it for a spin!!

Okay, I have steptronic in both cars, but I used to drive a stick. I always knew what gear I was in.

This seems as necessary as a phone with the ginormous number buttons.

in the E90s, the computer does know what gear you are in. It is even recorded in the black box history, should they ever need to print that out.

If the information is being out put from the computers, there should be a way to display it.

Thats only with the F1 package you retarD! No manual shifted car shows gear select on the dash because you have to be a fucking moron to not be able to look down or feel the shifter to figure which gear youre in.

Theres your flame.

Hilarious! I think it would be a neat mod. 4th & 6th look pretty much the same when looking at the shifter, so you have to look at the speedo and the tach and figure it out from there.

You really should keep it in your head, and focus on that sort of thing, but there have been a few times when I've been toolin' along in 5th gear at 120km/h and not shifting to 6th. But I check my gauges regularly, so a big "M5" in the display would be useful and give me a mental kick to shift. Certainly way more useful than telling me how many more kilometres I have before I need to fill up.

It used to be so much easier with a 4-speed. Or a "3 on the tree", but now I'm dating myself!

Don't let it get you down. Obviously HyperM3 is overcompensating for some other inadequacy.

So angry!! I sense childhood trauma at the hands of a stick shift driving, mentally delayed individual (being p/c and all)

J/K

Can't we all just get along, or some BS like that.....

Yeah, that must be it. Seriously, I think its a fantastic idea for someone who cant drive stick or needs useless info on their dashboard. Keep up the good thinking!

It would actually. I never say no to cool features. Pretty sure they don't provide that function though.

As opposed to all that useful info they put there like outside temperature.

The gear ratios in fifth and sixth gear in this car are very close. It wouldn't hurt to have a visual cue as to which gear you are in without having to look all the way down to the shifter.

You need to lighten up.
