AE's that are not split on top

My 2011 E90 has that typical AE design where one bulb feeds both AE rings. In this design the outer AE is open on top, i.e. it is not a full ring.

Meanwhile, on this page of e92lighting web site I see AEs that are supposedly fed from a single bulb on each side and at the same time has two full rings on each side

Could anyone please tell me what car it is? And how does it actually work? My car used the lightpipe design for the outer ring, hence the break at the top (where the "glowing" portion of lightpipe begins and ends). The car in the picture is obviously using a different approach. What approach is it? There appears to be some kind of tab on top of the inner ring in those pictures. What is the purpose of that tab?

P.S. No, I'm not into blue AEs. Just curious.
