Where to draw the line for Mods on a DD
Just wondering...I see some pretty decked out rides, but how many are daily drivers? I do drive my car pretty much every day and didn't want to go overboard, but then again do I??

When this sounds familair, quit modding your DD:
O-Dog (e90post forum sponsor): You got some money or not? 335i Modhead: Come on, man. You know I'm a little short. Hook me up with them carbon gills, man. O-Dog: *****, hook you up? Fuck outta here. 335i Modhead: Man, I got these cheeseburgers. They some double cheeseburgers. Just gimmie some painted reflectors! O-Dog: *****, I just ate. I just ate. If you ain't got no money, you just assed out. 335i Modhead: [as O-Dog was leaving] Come on, man. I'll suck your dick, man. O-Dog: The fuck you just said? 335i Modhead:I said I'll suck your dick, man. Come on now. Fo some carbon gills.... O-Dog: [shoots 335i Modhead] Suck on that, you bitch-ass trick. [to Longtran] Longtran: Anybody want a hamburger? Longtran: I don't want no motherfucking hamburger. O-Dog: I got it from that 335i Modhead. Last edited by edgarj; 04-29-2007 at 08:48 PM.. |

Mod as your bank account permits. If you're a billionaire you can mod as much as you want on every car you have.

My turbo s2k was my daily driver for over a year and I just modified the car to the point that it wasn't even reliable anymore, and I started spending more time attempting to get the car to drive like stock (ie. no rattles or vibrations) and it got to be that I was spending more time fixing it then enjoying driving the car. I'm positive that I won't let this happen to the 335 when it arrives, but only time will tell. I think I learned my lesson though.

Overall, my extensively modded 335 is just as quiet and subtle as it was stock. When I want the extra power, it's there, and at no cost (actually, I get 2mpg better mpg overall with PROcede). The m6 reps and F1 tires, I appreciate every day as a DD. Same with the larger, softer, M3 (multicolor stitching) steering wheel, and the Whalen short knob. The only mod I've done so far that is pure superfice, is the UR TiAl BOV, which I get a kick out of, but serves no puropse unless you like a side of rice with your beef. |

IMHO the limit of mods for a DD is that which keep it looking like a sleeper. As soon as a casual observer notices that the car has been modded - IMHO - it loses it's DD status and becomes a racerboy car.
I know many won't agree with me but that's why it's IMHO. That's why I love mods like the Procede and internal exhaust mods.

1) I would not lower a daily driver.
2) I would seriously rethink anything larger than 19" wheels. 3) Any power mods must not sacrifice driveability. 4) Stay away from body kits, except perhaps a subtle rear spoiler. 5) Exhaust should not be too loud. 6) Anything else that says look at me becomes a target for thieves and vandals. This includes obvious aftermarket audio equipment. 7) Any suspension should be the street-tune or fully adjustable street-track. 8) If you need the car daily, any unproven mods should be avoided. Let others be the guinea pigs. 9) Irreversible mods that will obviously invalidate your warranty should be avoided. |

The "too far for a DD" line is subjective, imo. The rule I go by is:
If the idea of getting in your car and going on a 500+ mile road trip at a moment's notice has you concerned about having to adjust or remove particular mod on your car, then that mod is not suitable for a DD. |

My M3 was my DD until I started racing it. One mod turned into another until I had put so much into it that I bought it out at the end of lease and now its my garage queen.
Rule of thumb, when you think of driving your car and it excites you and you cant wait to drive it forever, you havent gone too far. When you think of driving your car and you think about the stiff kidney jarring ride, the horrible gas mileage, and the lack of cargo room(because of it being gutted, larger fuel tank, or 1million watts of stereo) then you modded a bit too far.

No mods available now short of a sawzall will make a 335 anywhere near a poor daily driver but you're the only one who will knows what's overboard for you.

Most of these cars you see are daily drivers...there are dedicated show cars from time to time...but I think they are pretty rare here...I could be wrong.

2) Agree - 19" are the biggest I would go 3) Agree - dont put a huge turbo kit and the car and end up having outrageous power in the top part of the power band..but having mega turbo lag down low. 4) Somewhat disagree on the body kit...I think a tasteful aftermarket front bumper can work 5) Agree - I am not driving a race car on the street...with no mufflers...you should be able to drive around with your grandmother in the car. 6) Agree - like the subtle look..have never been into big flashy stereos...besides..they weigh a ton 7) Agree - depends on what you are going to do with the car..but since I will be DD and tracking...Bilstein Pss9 coilovers are exactly what I need. 8) Agree - I am not an early adopter of unproven technologies. That is one reason why I am not immediately jumping on the procede bandwagon. 9) Somewhat disagree - no such thing as irreversible mods IMHO, you just gotta buy more to put it back to stock. When I traded back in my old car I left on the short shift kit, center vent boost gauge because it was too hard to put it back to stock..and it wasnt that expensive in the first place.

I live in NYC. My rules are
no shoes bigger than 19" (17" if you drive like ya dont give a fuk) no lowering past half an inch no replacing bumpers - canards, ground effects ok no full cat-back systems - constant stop/go in traffic makes vrrom vroom very annoying. ive also scraped a hole in my x-pipe |

I think its all about taste. Do you want to look like those kids that have Honda civic's and scion's with lambo doors that don't look right. OR do you want to look like a BMW owner that knows how to spend his money right. Don't over do it. Moding is like an art, you should do it till you are satisfied with the results.
