Got new RFT after 37,000 miles
I know many here hate the RFT. I like it since it gave me good wear for a tire that is rated at 140 treadwear. But, it is def a very noisy tire as it wear out. I just replaced both my rear with the same RFT. The new tire are very quite (I never knew my car can e that quiet). My original front are still good for another 5K before replacing them.
Here is the rear before I replaced it. Being almost slick, it was very slippery and fun when wet and very nice grippy when dry. Everyone has their own preference...Go RFT

Hey thanks for the lecture. I am fully aware of the "insurance piss off comment" should some fender bender happens where it was my fault. That subject has been discussed here in other thread many time.
My post is not to say that it is safe to drive with tires this worn out. I am not here to recommend anyone driving with tires worn to this degree coz I really dont know any of your driving experience. I hope that by the time you have driven your car for 37K+ miles, you would at least know how the car will behave under certain condition (wet/dry/tire wear). With so many miles under my belt, I know how my car behave under many conditions. You have to drive very gently with tires like this. You dont fly thru a puddle of water with tire like this coz I guarantee you will loose control. Many times, under wet conditions, my rear end kick out with slight acceleration in 3rd gear in a u turn which is very exhilarating. I only do it with great caution! peace.................

Dude...lecture or not, you're just crazy for letting them get worn. Consider yourself very lucky for not getting into a bad accident with such worn out tires. So, basically the RFTs really wear out in ~ 20k mi. since it appears you drove on them for another 17k mi after they were worn to the point where 95% of ppl would replace them.

The wear on the rears also suggests they may have been overinflated. The center is worn while the sides have quite a bit left, which means they were crowned due to too much pressure.
Then again it might just be the way these type of tires wear . . .

yeah, really exhilarating in the wet
I take that as a compliment (frugal with balls of steel) Quote:
I was thinking the same thing. Maybe in the begining of ownership, it was over inflated coz I was not paying attention to the tire pressure and was just so happy driving the car. Later on, as I realized the middle was wearing out too much, I decided to keep an eye on the pressure and only inflated the rear to 40-41 psi.

I'm at 52,000km with the original run flats on the front two wheels (the rears have been changed once). They have no thread left on the edges (they were driven underinflated in the winter, as I was too lazy to check!)
Anyways, when you wear out the thread, I don't think the only issue is that of effectively driving "slicks in the rain" A lot of rubber has worn off at this point - I'm sure the tire is probably structurally weaker as well, and an accident waiting to happen, even in the dry. |
