335i and the storm

Wow, am I the only one who has suddenly sat back, absorbed everything over the last 9 months and realized that this 335i has just exploded BMW into a place they might not want to be? First, the fuel pumps and the massive mechanical issues around the oil cooler and bad press coupled with the delays and lemon issues arising out of the punp issue. Second, 4 month lead times to get a 335i coupe. Third, story after story after story of young kids killing themsevles in this car. Fourth, the numerous issues BMW is having in realizing they created a car that virtually EVERYONE can afford to mod to SICK LEVELS OF PERFORMANCE.

I feel like BMW built SUCH a fast, well handling and affordable car (compared to what performance times of this type use to cost) and its popularity has just exploded out of control which has exacerbated the normal first production year problems. Just seems like the normal LOW LYING BMW, speak softly and carry a big stick aura has gone out the window. Like BMW out did themselves this time and created a beast they can't control both on the streets and in the press. It all almost seems overwhelming....

Any thoughts?

I think some of those things are blown a little out of proportion by some people but an interesting thought.

Also, kids are more likely to kill themselves in WRX's, STi's and EVO's due to affordability. Take one look at insurance premiums for those cars and you will see that this is a fact.

well, let's focus on the positives here......whenever any company rises above their competition, there are bound to be mishaps and trials along the way. This car's time to market was to fill the "gap" prior to the M3's launch. As such, it has done a terrific job....well, may be even too good a job that its eating into the M3's territory (not for the purists of course).

It is truly a well balanced car that finally has the "right" amount of power. Being the 1st turbocharged car for the past 20 + years of BMW development (since all have been all motor for quite some time now), its doing a very good job of holding up so far. I think that most people who have experienced the "failures" are pretty irritated, but I'm willing to to bet that some of them also knew the risks of purchasing a "1st generation" car of its kind for BMW (turbocharged). One could say that these failures count towards BMW kicking themselves for creating such an unreliable beast.....but I disagree.

The fact that they took on this path towards better engine efficiency and power takes guts - it takes guts for any company to make a "shift" and continue to re-invent the wheel. This is vision and it defines the successful from the ordinary.

I truly feel sorrow for all the people who have crashed their cars and got hurt, or even lost their lives. It makes me sad just thinking about it. It is not fair, however, to judge a car company by the number of accidents occurring - when it is not a result of a "faulty" car that caused the accident, but rather a very high speed that the driver chooses to push towards. Any car is capable of reaching speeds high enough to injure a human being. Its the human being who makes that judgment call, not the car.

BMW is a car company just like any other....but the main difference being that they make the ultimate driving machine - and we are always given the choice to drive responsibly.

Hey, I agree with what everyone has said, was not trying to BMW, I actually think they have done an AWESOME job with the 335i, as they do with all of their cars, and I believe that EVEN AS I WAIT 30 DAYS for a new fuel pump.

Just have absorbed everything and thought, wow, wonder if BMW feels overwhelmed right now......but I guess that is a GOOD problem to have.

Thanks BMW, for making me smile

You think the 335i's problems are bad? BMW has $10,000 SMG transmissions grenading left and right on the M5. I think it's gotten better recently though.

Ya definetly not the first time BMW or any car manufacturer for that matter has released a car with some issues in the first year. I also don't see why the popularity is a problem.
