Adaptive Headlight Failure Repair
I just had this done on my 2006 330XI after hitting a major pot hole. Initial diagnosis cost $80 for the scan which determined I needed to replace the headlight ($1500 from BMW). I was able to get one used for $225 luckily. I actually did the repair myself (bumper and headlight removal) then took it back to my indy for coding. Unfortunately it came to light that the electronic module on the bottom of the headlight needed to be replaced so I had them do it (bumper off again!). $260 for the part from the dealer and over $500 in labour later and my warning light is off and adaptive lights work again.. total repair cost of $1171!! I was hoping for less but would have been well over $2000 had it been done by the dealer with new parts... ah well the life of a BMW!

these adaptive headlights are a POS. ive taken out 2 of them due to potholes. first one was replaced under warranty. second i just took it out and popped the projector back in the socket. these are way too fragile and expensive.

The smc II module (ahl) only cost $160 at my dealer....
But it needs to be programmed then coded which is $290 from my dealer. I got a used one and since it's already programmed, I can just code it into my car. Your dealer should have known it was the SMC module to begin with. My car is throwing an error, specifically for the drivers side module. |

Hey guys,
I'm thinking of getting a set of adaptive headlights for my 2006 325i. I live in a country filled with potholes and bumps so after reading this thread i'm having second thoughts. Not recommended? I have an option for just bi-xenons w/o the adpative headlight feature. |

BMWs are so complicated with it comes to repairs..... I didn't fix my adaptive headlamps problem cause it was from an accident, but it took me at least 3 times at my local body shop to fix.
Good luck. |

I would just go for the bi-xenons, much less likely to cause you any issues and the adaptive feature is an interesting trick but doesn't really help much in all fairness. If mine go again I am just going to get the error coded out and forget about it because it was certainly more of a headache, and more expensive then it was worth!

Xenons are just auto leveling. There's no such thing as bi-xenons that don't have adaptive lighting. |

Any reason new angel eye led bulbs would cause adaptive lighting control failure?
Still under warranty, but scared dealer will blame aftermarket led ae. Have been fine for months until this warning light today, strange. Nothing new has happened. E90 lci Last edited by rogerdiaz; 09-20-2011 at 08:13 PM.. |

Bi-Xenon is high and low beams are xenon. Most xenons auto-level, and only a few are adaptive. Adaptive refers to the swivel action when steering and altering the beam at certain speeds. MINI gives you regular bi-xenons, or you spend $100 more and get the adaptive function. With the E90, you only get adaptive in the US but it appears regular Xenon is an option overseas. |
