Shuddering with heavy throttle - at freeway speed

After hearing all this fuel pump failure business, any odd noises in my 335i scare the bejeezus out of me. Luckily I have no cold start, extended cranking or limp mode issues.

However - this has happened twice: I'm going 60 or so in 6th and floor it in order to make a pass. I'm too lazy to downshift because I know the torque will take care of me. Twice now, when I do this, the car shudders when I open up the throttle.

Generally I release the gas and then try again and it's fine. No limp mode, no lights.

Anyone else experience this? shuddering without any other fuel pump death throes. Thoughts?

mine has done that exactly, about 3 times...wierd!! I thought I was crazy, but the first time it happened was about a month ago, the last time about 10 days ago and my fuel pump hasn't died...seemed to do it right at 2500rpm...big shudder. Once i even threw a CEL, but that went away after i restarted.

Damnit! I am afraid to take my 335i on long trips in case it finally goes to crap in the middle of nowhere.

Soma4u, how many miles do you have? I have never gotten a CEL from it.

Ever have the engine race on start up? Idle races up and then settles, never a hard start? My coupe just had the throttle replaced at 3500 miles with your symptoms and the start characteristics. January build

How high does it race at startup? Mine goes to 1000-1500 rpm but that's pretty much like every vehicle I have ever owned.

Add me to this list of stutterers.

I accelerated from 60 mph in 6th gear and got about a full second or so of hard stuttering before I freaked and got out of the throttle. It only happened once and I have not had any of the other dying fuel pump symptoms. This happened a couple weeks + several hundred miles ago. Oh, and I may have the PROcede.

Haven't happened on my 335 yet, but on the numerous turbo cars I have owned, that problem is often fuel or spark/ignition related.

Not sure if you overboost due to some major vac leak how the BMW will react. If it attempts to cut throttle/fuel that could generate that feeling as well. Although unlikely...

ok...happened to me for the forth time this morning, same highway conditions and everything. I have about 4600 miles on the car and I cant remember if I have Procede or not It feels like the car is about to stall out! But just for a second or two. Now I'm freakin out again, cause I might have to do some work before I bring it in to the dealership and I really don't want to have to that!

so people with PROcede's are seeing this problem... its probably unrealated to the PROcede itself, but higher boost would most likely exacerbate the problem enough to be noticable on more cars..

Garage List
We had 2 PROcede appointments last week that had to be postponed because they were showing signs of fuel pump failure. Same thing. Hesitations in high gear and prolonged start up. Both completely stock cars. The problems are going to crop up more often now that the weather is changing and underhood temps are getting hotter. The hotter that flakey fuel pump gets, the more often it will act flakey.

Crapola you guys aren't making me any confident in the 335i!

Soma, is HOTlanta earning its name right now? Maybe that has something to do with it.

My cranking times are minimal still. Yours?

I get this problem 2x a week. No limp mode or anything, just a shutter/hesitation. I get nervous and let off the gas....

I thought Shiv said the procede came with some bypass thingies that puts you back to stock. Why not connect them and see if problem is still there.

only sunoco for me.

I just got mine updated with Progman 25.20 yesterday. Cured the long start glitches I was having.

I recommend all people having problems at least try the updated software first. My car runs like a dream so far (I though the pump was for sure dead), but we will find out over the next few months.

Not that easy. You have to reflash the PROcede to stock otherwise you'll get some CELs.

Well that's what I heard, given that I don't have a PROcede.

You can just pop out the procede and install his supplied bypass caps, according to another post.

Damnit, while I can't see what he says because he's on my ignore list, I can still see that Terry polluted my thread!

I feel so violated.
