Simota intake installed WoW
Took me less than an hour to install. Had a nut and bolt issue, $3 fix, but it went pretty smooth. Three observations on the install
1) loose fit of the mass air flow sensor inside the cylinder bore hole of the intake. 2) bracket fit on by bolt onto the body brace center hole (of 3 holes); the one hole without the threads. 3) opening shape of the intake, by the L-bracket is not shaped the same as the OEM. One more 4) put a bead of adhesive putty, its like clay, at the bottom of the CF part that sits ontop of the fan guard. First test drive and butt dyno is a big thumbs up. Sounding good, wait...ugly sick from low to mid to high rev ranges. Mid to high, such as when passing (throttle body wide open), is a loud rumble, especially when going under a bridge. Very Choice! Butt dyno result after 3 days: snappier throttle and pick up. Tried with DTC/DSC off also, and reaction is best. hp gains...well, in combination with the sound, it felt and sounded faster. Due to the simple physics of increased air and less restriction, I'd say an extra 1-5 hp is not out of the question. (I know dyno +1hp was documented) Saving my OEM intake to switch out for annual Dealer services. Last edited by cgnahc; 04-25-2007 at 10:39 AM.. |

You know..., I saw that group going to dynojet in the Wilmington area this Sat. 4/28 and was going to do a reconfirmation with RichP results of +1hp. (Don't remember if is was at the wheel or crank). I may not sign up but if I have the time I'll show up with tools and my stock intake to do a switch-a-roo.
With that list going on, it'll take them close to 3 hrs or longer, I bet, to get through all of them. |

Chris, I know that dinan3 has been wanting to dyno his car. Would you be interested in setting up or participating in another dyno meet?

1) there is enough interest after next week 2) finding a place in the Valley area, or vicinity, that is reasonably priced. |

I should know this, but can't remember. Do you have 6MT or steptronic? And if step, do they have experience in dyno testing BMW auto trans cars?

Step....don't know about experiences with these. I think it may be more tricky. Hard to duplicate amount of throttle over time and rev. I guess. May have to ask around a little.

Try this thread,

Here is my response to a good install question:
.................................................. .................................. I am going to be installing my simota this weekend and I have some questions I was hoping you could answer. 1) the OEM air intake that connects right above the radiator is connected with screws but the Simota CF piece looks like it reuires a bolt and nut on the left side. was any drilling required to enlarge hole and I don't appear to have a bolt for this. was this something you were missing? also it dordn't look like it gets polted on the right side. is this correct> 2) the brace that connects to the frame- did you use a screw or a bolt to connect? thanks for your help. 1) No drilling on the left bolt, which uses the small L-bracket. You may need to get a longer bolt and nut to attach this side. I used a #10 screw with a nylon insert bolt to lock it in. No bolt to the right side. I also used a putty, as mentioned to pad the bottom of that piece onto the fan guard. It's also an adhesive to keep it in place. 2) That was a bolt. It took a little extra positioning of the main intake body. As you see the open center hole is flanked by threaded holes. This center position was the best "angle" for the bracket. I used the bolt, washer, and nut that came with it. Keep all bolts & screws loose until you get the perfect fit. |

I think this sound is unique to Simota, because the cone is encased, thus creating a different resonance. So far so good. I'll do some pics at Bimmerfest this weekend.
