Front License plate no longer needed?

I have heard from several people that the front license plates are no longer necessary in the United States do to privacy issues. Has anybody else heard about this? If anything, this might only be in the state of Washington.

it's state-specific. Here in NY, it's required to be mounted on the front bumper, but I've always had mine in the front window without mention from the few police officers I've encountered.

I live is Seattle and don't have a front plate (didn't on my last car either) but I live with the full knowledge that I can be cited for it.
