Another Fuel Pump Post - Called BMW Service

I called my SA at New Century BMW to talk about something unrelated to the fuel pump. After the conversation was almost over, he asked me if my fuel pump had gone bad. I said "no." Then he said, it's only a matter of time. He said there are 4 335's at their service dept and said there are more on their way. He also mentioned that BMW NA is having a tough time getting enough of the new non-faulty versions of the fuel pump and that the backlog could get longer and longer (currently, a 2 week delay). Anyway, it does look like BMW NA is doing everything in their power to address this "before" it becomes a massive recall and they begin receiving a bunch of negative press.

I'm actually thinking about ordering a fuel pump and when it arrives I'll go in and have them install it (hopefully before mine goes bad).

you cannot order a fuel pump... see this:

NOTE:

Currently, the high pressure fuel pumps (HHP) are in extremely short supply. Until the further notice, follow the procedure below when ordering a replacement part:

Submit a PuMA case to the Technical Hotline/Drivetrain with title indicating "N54 HPP failure".

Based on the results of executed test modules and vehicle integration level, Technical Hotline specialist will provide you with an authorization to replace a high pressure fuel pump.

Then, your Parts Department needs to place an order for PN 13 53 7 537 320, using the PuMA case number as your purchase order number.

IMPORTANT:

PUMA CASES WITHOUT A FASTA DATA, OR CASES WHERE THE APPROPRIATE TEST MODULES WERE NOT PERFORMED, ARE NOT GOING TO BE PROCESSED.

PARTS ORDERS WITHOUT A PUMA CASE WILL BE CANCELLED.

Just wait it out. They'll probably send you the faulty version to get rid of their existing stock anyways.

thanks for the info.

question about this though (that I saw on the link you provided):

2. If the integration level is found to be "E089-06-09-540", or lower, then reprogram/recode complete vehicle using PROGMAN V24.02, or higher (target integration level "E089-06-12-510", or higher).

When they reprogram the ECU, do they simply do that by plugging into the ODB2 connection by the hood release lever OR do they open up your ECU?

they hook up to the bmw diag port, its a circular port in the engine compartment, the same one they use to reset oil change and maintenence intervals

This is at least promising news if its true. I really hope that there is a revised fuel pump now available.

News

Mine is dying. Earlier today I was told maybe 3 days if it flunks test. SM just called and said he was wrong. We have no pumps anywhere, not even in Germany. Bring us your car. If you need one you can store your car here or at your place or go on driving it. We will put you in a BMW loaner. This bites. Can anyone tell me what their wait time ended up being? Thanks.

My fuel pump went out last week and Im one of the four you speak of at New Century. They havent given me any ETA's but did put me in a X3. Ive read people been getting free stuff because of this. How might I go about requesting free part/services or even money? Car is also paid in full.

The answer will be HELL NO, but I am going to ask for a new car. What the heck. I'll give my service dept something to talk about.

I didnt even have to ask for free accessories. The SA offered them to me. Originally he asked if I wanted an iPod adapter installed for free but then I countered it with a clear bra. He said no problem! Im not happy that my car will be in the shop for 2-3 weeks but at least they are taking care of me.

WOW! this really sux. I was just informed by bmw of valencia that the fuel pump on my 07 335i sedan is failing (i've had my car just over a month) and needs replacement. Part is on back order and they need my car for at least a month. They want me to return the loaner they provided me and set me up with a rental car for the month...I dont know what to do...I got them to refund me the car note for the month, but i dont feel that is enough. I want to cry at this point, i miss my car and i've only been without her for 1 day

Get in line. There is a shortage of Kleenex around here.

Now I know a lot of people use Walbro fuel pumps. I have seen a lot of them on very modified fuel systems. However as far as I am aware they do not have a high pressure fuel pump intended for direct injection applications or at least there is not one that is a direct replacement for the Siemens unit in the 335i. The direct injection system in the 335i uses two pumps. There is a normal fuel pump that pulls fuel from the tank. Then there is another pump that generates the high pressure necessary for direct injection. This second high pressure pump is that one failing.
