Loaner car policy at dealer?

Quick question, does BMW NA mandate all NA dealerships to provide loaners to customer (ie...schedule maintance, SIB idrive update..stuff that BMW NA pays for) and if so, does the policy only apply to customer who purchased the vehicle at the original dealership and not if you bought your car from another dealer? Or is the loaner car strictly a goodwill policy from the dealer?

No mandate except for a few recalls, campaigns, etc.

It is up to each dealer to set a policy. Some are generous, some are not.

Some don't care where you bought the car, some will only give a loaner to their own customers.

Thanks for the clarification btw, this is OT, but have you heard anything or know the ETA for the next idrive update without VR issue? 25.02 or .01? My car is scheduled for service beginning of may

Yup, most of the time they only give out loaners to customers who bought their BMWs from them. And you also have to be 25 years old to get a free BMW loaner also. Or you have to pay for an enterprise rental car!

Well, last time I took the car in, they didn't have any loaners available, but they did pay for my rental car... So it's kinda Win Win, though a Dodge Charger is hardly a fair trade.

I'll bet if you're a repeat 7 series or M5, M6 buyer you get Loaner cars without fail.

My dealer has around 30 loaners. My CA said ideally it's best to plan for a drop off if possible, that way they can guarantee me a loaner.

If not, luckily my parents have an extra car I can drive.

+1 My CA told me the same thing--otherwise you end up in whatever Enterprise has sitting around--not always the best option....lol

Already tried that, called and asked nicely for a loaner but they said the dealership policy will only allow them lend out loaner if you purchased the vehicle from them originally. Not a big deal, I'll just take it to my original dealer. I just think this would be a pain in the ass if you happen to relocate to a different state of even to Norcal and most if not all BMW dealership adhere to this type of policy, and knowing it's very common they can keep your car for more then one day

The thats when you call BMW NA and say please show me in the fine print where it says a dealer can suppliment there national service plan..and then call the better business burea and report the dealer..it's simple....then have them explain it to them..then sue his dirty ass and tell him for settlement you want 2 new M cars a year at his cost....due to your mental pain....I swear I would ....these same dealers are the same guys who sold GM and Ford for years and after they ruined the names of the companies they go set up BMW and Benz dealers and bring the same shitty service....I know most of you won't agree but man I wish dealerships in the States were like most Japanese dealers, factory direct and factory owned...swear it makes life simple....

Does anybody knows how long I can have a loaner. My car is about to be service in the body shop and it will take like a week for them to get it done. Will I be able to have a loaner for 7 days. Anybody went thru this?

PerilloBMW is in downtown Chicago. If they are not keeping the car overnight, then they offer you a taxi cab up to $10.00 one way. This is more than enough for anyone to drop their car and then go to work in downtown. I kind-a like this a lot because if I get a loaner, now I have to worry about parking it in downtown. I'd rather take the cab ride...

I have gotten a 535 before. I call in a few days in advance and ask my service advisor if they can get me a good car. It was not a problem last time

My dealer says guaranteed if its more then 3 hours of work, but your basic service is like 2 hours tops. However they did say if its available and under 3 hours, they'll hook you up, thats in south FL.

Not sure if there is a time limit on the loaners. I would imagine each dealer sets their own rules. Usually they allow me to keep the loaner as long as they need to keep my car for. I believe the longest I've had a loaner for might be like a week. My dealer usually gives me a 328 loaner, but I have gotten a 5 series and a few VWs before. My main issue with their loaners is that they are usually disgusting. I've actually had one washed because I knew I would have it for a few days and it was so filthy it was making sick.

That being said I'm glad to get any loaner. When I had my VW unless they royally messed something up you usually didn't get a loaner or rental of any kind. They have a little buss that would drop you of close by but I worked too far to even use that.
