possibly, some people list their cars at a higher price because they over-value their own vehicles. I did this with my previous car and it took a little while to sell, ended up going from 18k to 14k.
just offer what you think the car is worth, not every price can be determined through % off and such. PM me the car your looking at if you want another opinion on price/worth |

Also check redbook dealer and private sale prices though they don't take low kms into account.

Redbook bullshit? Maybe, but it's fairly likely what a dealer will offer you at trade-in time. I rarely hear of anyone being offered more, unless of course they are meanwhile paying full price for the new car
As for private sales, the average asking price of all (Dealer and Private) MY08 335i coupes on Carsales is around $73K. There are even 8 or 9 with an asking price in the Redbook range. Perhaps the Redbook values are for standard non-optioned cars and if you add the value of M-sport packs, metallic paint and various other upgrades (new, maybe $6-8K so allow $2-4K) and add 10% for good measure you get an asking range of $70-$77K. Interestingly, if you go via www.carpoint.com.au and do their 'Value you Car' thing, you get significantly higher valuations. For an E92 MY08 335i step: Quote:

Generally, percentages wouldn't be hard and fast between dealers and private sellers. I personally, will get them to tell me their best price. After I ask a billion questions like a total moron, I will ask from time to time for them to check something special in. For example; my purchase last week
Whats your best price? xxxx Oh, the inserts are a little scratched, will someone swap them out for new ones? The nav maps are the latest yeah? Will you guarantee me that? So..servicing...I heard the corporate customers get 4 years free servicing....I want to be a corporate customer. So the best price is xxx hey? Even if I bought it right now? Ok, so look, i'll give you $$$, and i'll throw in $100 on top if you at least tint the windows for me too. here is $1000 as a deposit. Moral; got a 'best price', never tried to hit it lower, offered $100 more, got 4 years free servicing with corporate plan, tinting, new inserts. For private sellers, I just waive cash in their face, $10k a first then the rest if they agree - and NEVER let them 'think about it'. I start of saying "wooh, this is my 2nd car to look at today. my dad gave me money to buy a car TODAY, and im not going home without one." anyway, i am prolly just a total noob, but i have always been happy with the deals i get. |

I buy and sell plenty of cars, maybe 3 a year all private. I price them to sell and they do to the first person who looks at them.
I am not unrealistic in pricing. Most people live in a dream land. I love nothing more than emailing people on carsales 6-9 months after i made an offer and say, "Hey my offer of $XXXXXXX looks good now". they have the car advertised for what i offered in the first palce. The most true saying i think i have ever heard is: "90% of the time the very first offer you get will inevitably be your best". Cheers. PS: Low Km's if you study cars of all brands equals about $1000 for every 10,000Kms outside the Glass guide range, and let me tell you, when you go to an auction every dealer has the book in his hand flicking through to see what a car is worth, they don't worry about options or condition, same with trade time. |
