Battery area caught fire
Here is my awful story. Last week my 330i had a complete electrical malfunction and 3 hrs later mysteriously reset it self while about to be towed to the dealer. 4 days later smoke filled my car while driving and here is the result: A burned up car from the trunk to the dash! How do I post a pic of this car on this forum?

at the bottom of the window, look for a Manage Attachments button in the Additional Options window to attach an image with your post.
Not good for anyone owning a 330i to hear this (including myself). Glad no one was hurt.

Did you take the car to the BMW of Columbia? If so, what was their diagnostic or repair? Sometimes their Techs tend to forget "small" details that eventually take you back to the dealer for the same problem or related to it. Hope your insurance takes care.

Trunk / Battery area fire
OK. last week I went to get in my car with the electronic key. car opened up and the trunk. I put my laptop in the trunk closed it and got in the drivers seat. I put my key in the ingnition and noticed no lights, no dinging...nothing. I tried to remove the key and it was stuck! I kept trying to crank the car using the start button. I had a friend try and jump the cr thinking it was the battery and still no sign of life. I called a BMW friend down in Columbia ( I was in greenville) and he said that either the ignition swith slide was bad, i pressed the open door button too many times or the car didn't recognize the key. The last two issues will shut the car down thinking it was being stolen. SoI called BMW dealer in greenville and they didn't have a clue but to get it towed in. I called BMW roadside and the would have a tow truck there in 3 hours. I got a ride to hotel and came back 3 hours later to meet the tow truck. When I got there my tail lights were on. I had not left any lights on in th car. I went to the door and manually opened it from the sepoarated electronic key, sat in the seat and it started dinging. I tried to start it and it acted like it was dead. I tried again and it started. I drove it the next two days and then back down to Columbia on Saturday. on Sunday, I was coming back home with my daughter from ballet and we smelt a plastic burnng smell. Then a small film of my smoke filled the car and smoke started coming in from the sunroof control pnel box, I parked the car we jumped out and there was no flame. Smoke was coming from the trunk. I opened the trunk and the battery area was on fire. Once oxygen got in the trunk, it filled with flames and consumed the the car. Here are the pics. Any help??

Whoever touched the car last most likely screwed things up.

If no codes are being thrown use Chevron Techron fuel injector cleaner (concentrate). It solves rpm fluctuating upon cold start-up. Also, for most BMW problems start off by scanning your car with the Peake Research Tool. It contains the actual BMW codes. If you want to register a newly installed battery for free (just buy a $10 cable) and google/download BMWLogger

No answers yet. Didn't jump the battery from the trunk but engine area, haven't called BMW USA yet, but insurance said they would. Initial thought was the ignition switch may have been bad and sending constant voltage to the battery and may have overloaded that plate on top of the battery. Will keep you posted.

Abutler, sorry for your loss. I can only imagine how painful it was to watch your car get turned into scrap metal.
Thankfully, everything can be replaced and no one got hurt. Witty. This thread needed a bit of levity after those photos. |
