Thumbs down The last Philly rock station is gone

I mainly use my iPod, but WYSP was the last Philly radio station that played decent rock music as WMMR has been playing 99% crap for a while now.

WIP will be taking over 94.1 in about 2 weeks.

Does this mean you will have to cut your hair and stop wearing your black leather jacket in the summer?

Same thing happened here in Chicago. Only decent rock station turned into a news station. What's the world coming to?

Yeah man when the news hit that Q101 was done I was in shock. You'd think the last decent station would have enough of a following to stay alive, not to mention the fact bands like Disturbed, Chevelle, Rise Against, etc... all got put in the public light with Q101....

Oh well whatever. I wonder how the news station's numbers are. I can't imagine they've got the listener base that Q101 had.

...it also means less awesome concerts to go to throughout the year.

Car integration of the ipod really put the last nail in the coffin for terrestrial radio. The only place I hear it now is in a doctors office and the only thing on the radio is top 20 (more like top 5 on repeat).

I listen to it on the way to and from work, but that's about it. I grew up in SE Michigan with some decent morning shows, so on my 1+ hour commute every morning, I like to listen to that sort of thing (with some great music mixed in of course) as opposed to straight music out of my iPod.

Also, I've been exposed to some new stuff (specifically AWOLNATION and Foster the People) lately only because I listen to the radio. Without that, where do I pick up on new bands and music? Word of mouth?

I don't know, I like the Drive 97.1. Not bad. Old stuff, but not too bad.

Satellite radio? I've found FAR more music since getting sat than I ever had with terrestrial. They have so many stations for every little niche that it's really a no-brainer. If I get bored with talk radio (rare) then I go to altnation and pick up probably 5 new artists that I like. I then go home and download their discographies and give them a try.

I'm lazy. Car doesn't come with sat radio so I don't use sat radio.

I'm lucky that even Atlanta, being the "hip hop capitol of the world", still has three good rock stations. Two of them play the same older stuff like Led Zeppelin and every single song from Boston ever made and one plays hard rock stuff and absolutely kicks ass.

That really sucks for you guys in Chicago though.

Then you'll be without a rock radio station. This is like TV going digital... no box = no TV.

I probably only know two or three people who still used rabbit ears when that change came about. I've been on the digital cable provider train for years.

However, don't you have to have a receiver and shit installed in your car to get satellite radio? If so, then I'll pass. I've had so many goddamn electrical problems in my car, and everything is FINALLY all working at once (after three years), so nobody is touching shit at all, ever, until something breaks again.

The music industry has not clue what they are doing, they change format so fast on all these station. I honestly get tired of just listening to ipod music even with a 5K music library. I also got tires of sat radio since the play about the same thing over and over again, I like a mix of music or various times and genre and WYSP did a good job of mixing music and such and Danny was okay, not too bad and no over the top like Horward. But I did get board of him some time, just like Howard when he went into a tirade and drop f bombs all over the place.

Most stations out there have so much preprogramming it just all sounds the same. Clear Channel is the worse of them all, all there stations with the same genre play the exact same songs at the exact same time all over the country. and unless a song is extremely popular and they can sell ads around it they will not play it.

The exact same thing happened in NY last month. Our only good station 101.9 RXP turned into 101.9 FMNEWS

Seriously?

So...just for clarification purposes, can you define what is meant by 'Rock'? Cause if you tell me that you're not going to be able to hear 'The Band' belting out 'Take a load off Annie (The Weight)', follow by some crappy CCR song that borderlines the time I was born, then there's no love lost.

Now you have something that quite playing modern rock...Avenged Sevenfold, Atreyu, Seether...etc...I'd be pissed to.

Music in Pittsburgh has sucked for years and years. I've been a Sirius subscriber since 02, and I'll never look back.

They play modern rock as well as classic rock such as Zeppelin.
