Mobile 1 5w-30 ?

I dont know how big of a deal it is. I took my car in for an Oil chance. (I usually do it myself but haven't had time) anyway when my Indy shop does it. They usually used a BMW Approved oil LL (something like that). But today the tech and I made the mistake of not reading the back to make sure its a the right rating. he put in Mobile 1 5w-30. From what I have search people on the Forum are saying it's too thin of an oil. Should I be worried and and the oil?
car has 716xx miles on it. Change the Oil every 5000 miles or so

Prior to BMW's switch to synthetic oil, I used 5w30 Mobil 1 in my Z3 for a few changes until BMW 5w30 syn became available. Although I wouldn't use it now except in an emergency, there were no problems.

But since you change your oil every 5k, it should be OK for normal driving conditions.

Oil

The issue is not that it is too thin (5W-30 is what BMW's oil is), it's that the chemical composition is different. Mobil 0-40 or BMW's Euro Castrol is what is recommended. I believe it has a higher zinc content for high pressure wear.

I would have it changed to the correct oil, for peace of mind if nothing else.

Should be fine. Just drain it after 5K miles like you normally do.

You are wasting your time and money changing fully synthetic oil at 5,000 mile intervals. Just saying...

I value your opinion.

My opinion: That would keep me up at night, it's cheap insurance, I would change non LL-01 out at the low end of 5000-7,500 miles.

I change LL-01 at around 7,500-10,000.

Those turbos are running really hot and the oil temp on the N54/N55 runs high . The Mobil1 5W-30 has much less of HTHS rating than the 0W-40. I would change it at 1000 miles or less if i were you.

HTHS = High-Temperature/High-Shear, for those wondering.

I believe one of the requirements for LL01 is a HTHS of 3.5 or greater. From what I've read, Mobil1 5W-30 has a HTHS of 3.1.

The Mitsubish Evolution X is a turbo and specifies 5W-30 oil. http://www.mitsubishimotors.com/medi...al%20Specs.pdf
The problem is that I'm having a hard time finding an apples to apples comparison because most cars' temperature guages measure coolant temperature. Your 335 measures oil temperature. I was trying to find another turbo with comparable oil temperatures as the 335.

In a turbo application, 5,000 miles is a good OCI, esp if the car is driven hard at all. Turbo's in general, produce very high heat and are hard on oil.

OP, if your "Indy" isn't anal enough to know before hand what he is putting in your car...I might question their overall trustworthiness.

1 run of M1 5w-30 will not hurt...but you could drain it yourself and fill it quickly enough. These cars are easy to change the oil. I wouldn't change the filter. That is what I would do if you are like me...it will stick in your mind if you don't.

Why not offer to buy the correct oil and have them cover the labor to replace the Mobil currently in the car? That's a reasonable offer, and one they should be willing to accept. After all, it's their mistake, so you could be a DB about it and force them to redo the oil change.
