2011 vehicle.. putting mods on too soon?
my 2011 e92 335i xdrive is on its way!
Yes, I am stoked! I've been searching for the 07-08, but I had the absolute hardest time trying to lock one down. Anyways, It's a new car with full warranty, etc. I've read that sticky posting about mods vs warranty from head to toe. Now, I know I will most likely do some minor mods for sure without worrying. I'm thinking Maybe I'll put some mods on and remove them back to stock before I bring it in for service (ie exhaust, intake, etc) Would that be a safer thing to do? I really do not want to wait three years My friend told me they might still be able to know. I probably cant JB tune it...... Any advice? I am aware of the mods vs warranty.. My question is should I wait or just go on with it and remove before service?

I think it's largely dependent on your dealers and SA. Some people have better luck than others. From what I've read on these forums, it also depends on what you are modding. like the dealer can't void the warranty on your engine just because you put on an aftermarket suspension. seems like there's still some element of risk involved but if you are not extremely risk averse, then go for it. maybe check around with other owners in your area and see if there is a dealer and SA that they have found to be more accommodating or mod-friendly

have fun removing an exhaust everytime you bring it in for service...with that said, you do run the risk of of dealers 'not warrantying' a claim and blaming it on mods...pay to play.
as far as tune, go for it, but I'd definitely remove it before any service(cobb ap is definitely easiest for this, but I run a JB4 so not trying to get into a war between the two) |

Nice, I guess for now I will do what is easiest to remove and stay away from heavy performance as much as possible. Thanks for your inputs

If you decide to to the "pull shit off" method, remove your name, plate and any other info that could identify you. SA's prowl this site all the time. My dealer caught a guy who was having issues with his N54 overheating, the dealer could not re-produce the problem. Customer pulled off his JB3 every time he went in. The SA found him on E90 with his list of mods in his sig and refused to cover the overheating problem, said it was caused by running his car too hard. |

maybe not a good idea to blindly call the dealer's service dept and ask "hey how do you feel about mods?" but if you happen to meet someone in your area with performance mods, ask them who their SA is and then call that SA and talk to him

Plenty of mods you can do to your N55 without worrying about warranty. No need to wait 3 years.

An aftermarket exhaust won't void your engine's warranty. If you are doing a cat back then you won't have to worry about voiding your emissions warranty either.

Mechanical mods that are not OEM e.g. downpipes, aftermarket tune - take off before going in for service. Check out BMW Performance parts, they cost a pretty penny but are OEM so no warranty issues whatsoever.

Not too sure about those. If you are replacing fog bulbs with the same spec light as OEM, no one's going to care, but if you install OSS headlights ... obviously the dealer is not going to service those.

As far as proving a tune caused an engine issue...all the dealer has to do is prove the existence of a tune. Once they can prove the engine has been run out of spec, any issues relating to the engine will not be covered under warranty regardless of whether the tune actually caused the problem or not. That said, anything unrelated to the engine is still covered.
I have, however, heard of stories where dealers went as far as denying warranty work on brakes because of a tune. The argument was the tune increases the horsepower, which can increase the load on the brakes, which means they were operated outside of spec, and thus no warranty. Pretty grey when it gets to that point...best to have a great relationship with the dealer! I think the most important aspect of mods on a new car is to take your time, decide what you like and don't like about your car, and come up with an integrated idea that complements your car and doesn't take away from the original design. See the Singapore 1M if you have questions about this! hahah |

Why? If I'm not mistaken the 2011 E92's have the super bright new style angel eyes already why would you spend money on "upgrading" those when they look the best out of all the options?
