how reliable is the new 3.0 twin turbo?

since this the 1st turbo charged engine offer by bmw in a long long time, how's everyone's opinion on its reliability and longivity. i wish they use a detuned version of the e46 m3's 3.2 I6 instead of the turbos.

if you dont like turbos go test drive a z4 M coupe.

ummm, i'm still deciding whether to purchase or lease. the longevity of the bmw turbo engine is the biggest deciding factor.

It is more complicated, so it will definately be more unreliable. How much more unrealiable is anyones guess.

If your #1 goal is reliability buy a 328i/325i, or an '06 330i.

i thought the engine used in the 335i is the old e46 block (which was stronger then the e90 325/330 block). meaning it has been around for years and its a GREAT engine!! now the turbos may fail / require maitenance in time..but i wouldn't expect until 75k or more.

I think it will be just fine...after BMW fixes the fuel pump and oil cooler issues.

Can't do any more than speculate at this point. It is too new to have any reliability record.

However, "Motor" is BMW's middle name (or "Motoren" to be exact). So, anticipate no worries.

If long term motor reliability is a priority, you can always wait for the diesels to come to US in 2008.

They are Mitsubishi turbos which are one of the best in the world. I had the same concerns however turbos have been used on Mercedes diesels and last a lifetime, possibly more as well as Porsches.

On safe side, I would change the oil much more frequently than suggested (5-7k). In addition, I would hold off on the mods such as the Shiv's Proceed until there has been more real world testing. The factory settings are fairly mild with limited boost.

In my case, I opted for the turbos because when you drive the car the last thing on your mind is the longevity of the turbos.

Have fun and drive the hell out of the car!

I've had twin turbo cars for the past 10 years a 93 3000GT VR4 and 4 years on my 2001.5 S4 and never had an Turbo or engine failure. My Audi is stock aside from the APR chip and the Mitsu has the AEM ecu among many other things and neither has failed. So I wouldn't think the turbo is a cause for alarm.

+1 The turbos aren't new, just the application by BMW. With hard use, the turbos should last AT LEAST 75 K miles.

one thing for sure though, i'll definitely get the extended warranty if i decide to purchase. btw, never drove a twin turbo before, i'm driving a single turbo audi A3 now and i love the sound of the blow-off valve, how's the turbo sound of the 335i?

Funny... i'm the exact opposite. If it weren't for the turbo platform I never would have been interested in the 335 to begin with, especially if it put out less power then the E46 M3. If it weren't for tuning, I would have a different car on order right now.

As far as longevity goes, the only problems so far have been the fuel pump mostly, which blows if you have a car with a defective pump, but isn't too bad considering this is the 1st year of production for this car. The N54 has cast iron sleeves so I wouldn't worry about reliability problems if you are concerned with it being a turbo engine, seems like a solid platform.
