Strange noise after fitting 19" VMR V710

Hello everyone,

I'm from the UK and last week I took delivery of a set of VMR V710s thanks to Charles Tran from VMR over in the USA.

Fronts: 19 x 8.5 et45 with 225/35 tyres
Rears: 19 x 9.5 et50 with 255/30 tyres, the tyres are Yokohama S Drives.

I've just installed them onto my 2010 E87 M-Sport with the stock M-Sport suspension and they look absolutley amazing despite the rusty calipers and drums. However, whenever I set off I can hear a strange noise which sounds like the car is rolling on a hollow oil drum, a bit like a light grinding noise but the noise is "hollow" (sorry that's the best as I can describe it). It's so noisy that it overpowers the BMWP exhaust noise that I have installed and I don't know what's causing this.

Here are some notes to consider:

1. Out of the four wheels only one of them fit onto the wheel hub bore/lip smoothly, whereas the others I had to forced them on by tightening the bolts. I think this is because the BMW wheel hub bore is 72.5mm and the VMR wheel centre bore is 72.6mm, so it was a very very tight fit. But since the hub face meets with the wheels and there are no gaps so no vibrations, there shouldn't be any problems should there?

2. I can't really see any clearance issues in the rear, however, in the front, the wheels are very close to the strut assembly with less than 1cm clearance. Does this move, or is it only the springs above it that contracts/expands? If it doesn't move, then wheels shouldn't grind against the strut assembly and therefore should be ok? Plus, the noise is a constant noise and is loudest when driven at moderate speeds (20-40mph), so if it was some sort of grinding, I should be able to see it right?

3. There are no alignment issues and the wheels are balanced as there are no vibrations at all on the motorway.

4. Could it be the tyres?

Any suggestions?

I know it's a lot to take in, I just want to get down as much information as possible to help resolve this issue.

Regards,
Paul

Paul,

Do you happen to know where the noise is coming from? Front or rear? Does it go away after a certain speed? Feel free to email me directly and we'll assist you in diagnosing this situation.

Post some pictures up dude, i bet the rims look great
As far as the noise... Did you hear the any noise prior to putting on the rims ? That is very strange especially if you hear by just rolling on a flat surface.. Sounds like a brake issue, calipers possibly rubbing on the rotor a tad, warped rotors..There really is no reason the new rims and tires would cause this. My new VMR 713 and Yoko AD08 never had any sounds like this..My 713 fit very tight on the hub ...just some rubbing issues that were taken care of with a roll...as well as the felt liner in the fender well needed to be pushed up a tad(make sure the liner is not rubbing)...but my issues were only heard on big dips in the road....Good luck man.

I'm not sure where the noise of coming from, I had the 17" 207m wheels from factory prior the VMR wheels and there were no noise at all. I'm going to put the 207m wheels back on the front, leaving the VMR ones on the rear and drive around to see if the noise persists and vice versa. Then finally put all four 207m's back on to try and isolate the source of the noise.

The rims look sick! They are huge and really fill the arches I will post some pics up very soon.

When driving on the motorway at 70mph, the noise is not that apparent unless you really concentrate on the noise. Prior the VMR wheels, when putting the foot down to accelerate (especially on the motorway) you could hear the exhaust getting louder. But now, it's muffled a bit by this strange noise.

Oh btw, I find that when coasting/ease of the accelerator the noise is the loudest and also when driving at speeds of 20-30mph. I think beyond these speeds the noise is muffled a bit by the engine noise, however, I can still hear it.

You could remove the wheels and inspect for areas that show rubbing. It sounds like you're rubbing on something.

So I've been busy over the weekend swapping the wheels over and the strange noise is certainly coming from the front wheels.

FRONT--REAR = RESULT
VMR-----VMR = noise
207m--- VMR = no noise
207m--- 207m = no noise
VMR-----207m = noise

After mounting on the VMR wheels I turned the wheel out on full lock and took the following photos:

As you can see that the inside of the rim is very close to the strut assembly however, it's not touching. And in the 2nd photo, I put some paste on the inside rim just to see if it touches the strut assembly whilst the car is in motion. I went out for a drive around my estate going over speed bumps and have found that the rim does not touch the trut assembly as the paste has not transferred onto it. I really cannot see what else can be touching the wheel causing the hollow grinding noise. It makes me feel I regret buying these rims but they just look amazing

I did record the noise but during playback it seems like the mic could pick it up.

Does anyone know if the source could be the tyres or its pressure? Or maybe something else?

Have you checked your front wheel bearings for play? The wheel should not contact any part of the vehicle as confirmed above. This sounds to be some kind of suspension or hub issue.

Are you running OE bolts? Any spacers?

PULL your new wheels off and clean ALL the RUST off of the hubs. Use a good wire bush or even a drill or flex attachment to clean the hub's lip area and wheel bolt area clean. Use some anti-sieze to make sure new rust doesn't come back. I think this is your problem.

You should not have to force your new wheels onto the car's hubs. Something is not right there. I bet you will have big problems trying to remove your new wheels. Even with OE wheels... the rusting hubs of our cars can be a major headache. CLEAN them well.

Yes I'm using OE bolts and no spacers. I might resort to buying a pair of 3mm spacers for the front and see if that solves the problem. Will I require longer bolts for 3mm? I think I've read somewhere that for 3 and 5mm spacers, you don't need longer bolts. Is this true?

Also, do u think reducing the tyre pressure to about 34-36psi would make a difference?

I've already done that when I did my little test and the noise is still there. With regards to forcing the wheels on, I think it's due to having the rims powdercoated and therefore, giving the wheel bore that extra thickness.

So this evening I jacked up the car and spun the wheels and there's no odd noises to be heard except for the following noise which I was told is normal from the brake pads:

I've also took some pics of the gap between the rim and the suspension arm again just to see if there's any contact and there wasn't, but they're really close.

And also, I unscrewed a few bolts from all four wheels and there are no signs of grinding on the tips whatsoever :|

Surely it has to be something, I've used the same bolts with the 207m wheels and when driven with them on, there is no such noise. I've also compared how far the bolts sick out when threaded through both sets of wheels and the length is exactly the same on both sets.

Hey .BMWPaul, did you ever found the source of the noise? Hope you did. Curiosity is killing me!

Hey guys,

Unfortunately not I think it's just road noise from the tyres. But by now I've gotten use to the noise and don't really notice it unless I'm listening for it, although can still be heard at 30mph when it's the loudest.
