Roof Rack

I had heard bad things about the aftermarket roof racks for the GT (bending the roof when tightened down), so even though I've got a Yakima and Thule kicking around from older cars, I bought the BMW rack. An interesting observation is that the plastic covers for the feet to not meet the roof when installed and tightened up - the metal feet that fit into the well prevent that. So, the only contact with the body is in the well. Probably works well, but looks a little weird and will allow moisture in there. I'd guess it drains out, since that little flip-up cover isn't water tight.

Anyway, while my folding trike will fit in the back, I've decided the risk of chain oil, road debris, etc., are better relegated to the roof rack. Glad I'm tall, it's a long ways up there!

Do you have a photo of your roof rack or a web-site I can go to where I can see the model you purchased?

Since it's a BMW accessory, you should be able to view it on the BMW website of your country, but this is a reasonable view http://www.shopbmwusa.com/ProductDet...g&utm_content=

This shows the base rack with an accessory on it.

Are they easy to take off and reinstall? Or are they to be left on "permanently?"

It is designed for easy on/off. It comes with a T-handled security torx wrench...one bolt in each end. Just loosen it, lift the thing off, flip the cover back down.

The first time you install it takes a little more time as you need to install a plastic 'bumper' in the bottom of the well under the cover for the rack's feet to sit on (this stays there - this prevents the feet from scratching the paint and helps distribute the load), then, you may need to adjust the width of the support feet so they line up properly with the holes in the roof. Then, you snap in the rubber strip in the slot of the top of the rail.

You'd want to remove it for normal running around and especially on a long trip if it wasn't going to be needed to maximize fuel economy. Plus, they warn you NOT to leave it on through a car-wash. My guess, maybe a couple of minutes to remove - it's just four captive screws that need to be loosened (one on each corner) and it lifts off.
