[article] New car safety system can prevent low-speed crashes: study
WASHINGTON — Auto safety experts say a new type of crash avoidance system can dramatically reduce the frequency and severity of low-speed, rear-end collisions in bumper-to-bumper traffic. A study released Tuesday by the Highway Loss Data Institute found that 2010 Volvo XC60s outfitted with a standard collision avoidance feature called City Safety are far less likely to be involved in low-speed crashes than other mid-sized SUVs without the system. Insurance claims that pay for damage to vehicles hit by an at-fault driver were filed 27 per cent less often for the XC60 than comparable vehicles. Bodily injury claims were 51 per cent less frequent. The institute is funded by the auto insurance industry. Researchers chose to study the Volvo system because it has been on the market the longest. I hate to say it but I've got a better one...it's called USING YOUR EYES.
But yeah, good to see technology like this being implemented. Not everyone on the road is the best driver but this sure makes it just a bit safer. (if we were all great drivers though, there'd be no use for things like airbags) |
