Close one with unmarked 3 Series!

On the Motorway 80-90mph. Most were doing these speeds. The 70mph limit is now outdated.
On the hardshoulder, a stationary Space Grey 3 Series. Nothing out of the ordinary, the car looked totally stock.
Like ours but older, it was a 330d SE and all of a sudden it lit up Red and Blue and accelerated - HARD!
Bollocks.
We slowed to 70mph gently and stayed behind it. Its lights went off and it once again looked like any old E90!! It then accelerated again and thankfuly away from us! 30 seconds later, we pass it on the hardshoulder again as it pulls up a speeding VW Scirocco. Close one! If we set off 5 seconds sooner, that VW would\'ve gotten away and we would\'ve had a ticket!
I couldn\'t believe how good unmarked cars are now! There were no changes in its exterior at all. You had to stare really closely at its tinted rear window to see that it was indeed Police. Very impressive. The only slightly out of the ordinary thing about it was that it was a 330d SE and nearly everyone goes for the M Sport over here in the UK. But you would have to be a real car bore like me to notice that. There are only 800 E90 330d SE\'s in Britain so they are actually fairly rare to say we own one!
What are the unmarked cars like over there in the States? Obvious or not?

I've seen a yellow taxi serve as an undercover car a couple times in my area. Bet the people that got pulled over were very confused to see a taxi with red and blue lights pulling them over.

I've seen one of those in action, during the blizzard that crippled NYC last winter. Some guy decided to run the light at Lex and 42nd and almost t-boned the "cab," I wish I could have seen the look on the driver's face.

Only unmarked police cars Ive seen are the old Towncars that all the cops use. Seen maybe one or two night shift chargers but you can tell.
The funny thing is very time someone sees one of these cars driving down the road everyone slams on their brakes only to find its some poor old lady

We have some pretty sneaky under cover vehicles around Vancouver. The usual ones are Chevy Tahoe's or suburbans. Ive seen a Chevy 1 ton with a "new driver" sign on the back that was a cop. Also saw a Ford F-350 dually with a bush bar and canopy, looked like someones work truck but it was parked with its police lights on when I saw it.

The Maine State Police have a bunch of Mustang GTs. The only way you can tell is they have tint darker than is allowed in this state. They like to drive along in the right lane at exactly 65mph and nail people who pass them.

We also have a bunch of completely unmarked Chevy Impalas, but considering no one BUT cops actually drives those turds you can be pretty sure if you see one it is a cop.

I've never seen a towncar used as an unmarked police car.

This is kinda irrelevant but I've lived in Jersey all my life and am used to seeing crown vics as police cars....both marked and unmarked.

Now that I've been at school in Philly for a couple years, the police there use chevy impalas. So I get confused as shit every time I drive between the two states.

When I'm in Jersey, I see an impala and think it's a cop. When I'm in Philly and I see a crown vic, I think it's a cop.

Quite annoying....

While I'm sure that there are a couple of Town Cars running around as unmarked cars, they're about as common as BMW 3 series cop cars in the US - yep, I'm sure there's a few of those around too.

In DC you'll see lots of Town Cars with hidden police lighting, but they aren't undercover cops cars.

I've never seen a police vehicle in the US that was an import brand. The sneakier unmarked vehicles I have seen are the Chargers and SUVs without lights mounted on the roof.

Virginia has a pretty good amount of unmarked cars. Mostly blue, black and silver Impalas, but Dodge Chargers are all over the place now. Of course Crown Vics are still on the prowl. The state police also have unmarked Chevy tahoes all tinted out in various colors, but you can always tell they're cops because they always have the cheap unfinished steel wheels. Never do they have anything European or anything actually fast for that matter.

Back to the OP, the undercover cop cars here in the states almost always are the same vehicles that are used marked, except there's some attempt to hide lightbars by installing them inside the car and the paint job is usually some boring color.

Usually there are a bevy of antennas and the tires/wheels are performance, and the license plate will be noticeably different in some way (E in California, MP in Illinois, etc). As mentioned previously, no imports, all US-made 4-doors.

Bottom line, they're extremely easy to spot.

Fairfax county has a 3-series convertible undercover car. I thing they seized it in a drug raid.

Ive seen some government Town cars maybe fo sho
Never in my life have I heard of a GERMAN cop car here in the states. Thought that any non-American police car was taboo or something

I'd be pretty nterested in seeing one, just not while theyre giving me a ticket.....

Ultimately I'm sure it just depends on the state.
