STETT Performance Stage 2 Oil Cooler Kit w/ 180F Thermostat - Addendum
Hi All,
After lurching for a while as an unregistered user I finally had reason to register and post. I have a 335xi which came without an oil cooler and was heading to a driver training day. From this forum I knew I was going to have temperature issues and ended up choosing the Stage 2 oil cooler from STETT. I followed Former_Boosted_IS post on the DIY install of the STETT oil cooler (http://www.e90post.com/forums/showthread.php?t=461200) and it is excellent. However I encountered a few items that should be posted. My 2007 335xi 6AT is Canadian delivered and is completely stock with the standard front bumper. First item was the 90deg hose fittings from the oil stat to the oil cooler. I found that having to offset the two 90deg hose fittings made it too tight where the fittings went down into the wheel arch. By simply adding male to female fitting (shown in red in the photo below) allowed the two 90deg hose fittings to be parallel and made more room for them. Second item was the diffuser plate. It didn’t fit the way I wanted until I encouraged it . The photos below are self explanatory. Third item was I had interference between the bottom outside corner of the oil cooler/ bottom fitting and the front bumper. This caused a hum in the car at around 1500 rpm. Trimming the bottom outside corner mounting bracket (shown in red in the photo below) and changing the bottom fitting to a lower profile arrangement (shown below) solved the interference and induced hum in the car. The final items were some cosmetics to keep the car looking right. The original fog light in my car won’t fit with the oil cooler so I had to order the shallower version. The photo below compares the two. Unfortunately, you can’t buy one as the reflector of the newer style is noticeably closer the lens than the older style and the newer style lens is glass while the older is plastic. For the record the part numbers are 63-17-7-158-541 & 63-17-7-158-542. Also the front right grill is partially closed. To maximise the air coming into the cooler I replaced it with a completely open grill. The photo below shows the two. Also for the record part number is 51-11-7-134-080. hey i have this noise at 1500 rpm i have this kit in my 335i without thermostat.

Thanks PDS for the update.
I might get the STETT stage 1 kit for my 335i which does not have the factory oil cooler. Since the stage 1 has a smaller cooler, will I encounter the humming problem and the fog light problem? |

samchoi604, I don't think you'll get the humming as it is smaller cooler. I would still recommend adding the male to female fitting in my first point as this gives additional clearance to the hose fitting.
I'm not sure about the fog lights but I suspect you will need to get them as well. |

Thanks so much for answering my questions PDS.
Just a few more questions if you don't mind. Did STETT include the oil filter housing for you for an additional $260, or did you have to get your own from the dealer? Is the male to female fitting just a generic auto part that I can get at a local auto store? Did you modify the passenger fender liner so there's vents for the cooler's back? Pic: Do you know where I can find STETT's original instructions in pdf? |

I did get them to send the housing but they forgot to include the OEM bolts. These can be picked up from the local dealer. The bolts that bolt the oil filter housing to the engine are supposed to one use only. I reused them but I was carefully observing how it tightened to see if the bolt yielding. If you don't know what I mean by a bolt yielding buy new bolts!
Follow the original thread and find the PDF BMW instructions for retrofitting the oil cooler to find the instructions changing the oil filter housing. Yes the male to female fitting is generic 37.5deg JIC fitting. I haven't bothered to make vents for it. I'll just keep an eye on it and if needed I'll make one. I never found or got PDF instructions from STETT although I did ask them via email. I got a paper copy of instructions in the kit but they were extremely basic. I have the same hum using the thermostat except I call it more of a reverberation. I have left my fog lights out and I find (now that its getting colder) my oil temps hover around 80C. Thinking of replacing the fog lights with low profile ones to block the cooler a bit; Id like to see running temps above 100 at least. Im running at stage 2 btw. The kit works great though. I never saw oil temps above 115 this summer unless I was sitting in traffic.

hi, im doing a custom oil cooler job on my 07 335i that had no oil cooler. i accidentaly stumbled on this thread and man i think you saved my project. The oil cooler i have mounted on the opasenger side wheel well seems to be pushed out by the foglight housing, and my 19" wheels are rubbing the wheel well plastic, i think these foglights are my solution thanks man!
