Camera system

I was a bit inspired by all the activity here so I decided to finally put the parts on the car for the camera system I have been planning for a while.
Anyways, here is the start:

It felt good to park straight without getting out of the car for once, except to observe the vertical distance (that will come later). I had the screen on driving slowly around, its quite cool and definitely worth the 4 hrs in 30C+ heat harassed by mosquitoes.

The tape is temporary, I just wanted to get a feel for the distances and angles involved, a more professional installation will be attempted later.. drilling holes in my car, that should be fun.

The screen looks promising. But the attached cameras..... I am not quite sure I like them attached on my side mirrors.

Alpine has a very nice camera system for the Alphard which blends in with the side mirrors. Wish they have that for your F10

How many external cameras will you have on your car? One on each side? Can you still fold your mirror? Whats next, machine gun and rocket launchers??

MGs and Rockets are so outdated. Cameras are just camoflauge. They are highpowered microwaves and laser assemblies

And don't give away grim's secret identity as a member of the Third Echelon.

Drill holes on your car! Wow you sure have a lot of guts Grim. You have a lot of heart to do all these DIYs. Not for me, I am too lazy even to wash my car.

I wonder if grim should buy the BMW side-mirror housing for surroundview, and retrofit small wide-angle cameras onto it like stock units?

Grim bro,
the embarrassing point is when you parking there were other car waitting to pass, you don't have much time to check out those screen at all!
If you got time while parking, why not just come out your car and check?
Alternatively, practise this by use "icecream-cone" to used it
I practised a lot and now used to the size and can park my car (passenger-side) very close to the wall or something, 'cause I have to do so very often

Come on! Although the F10 is bigger, it is by no mean a BIG car to park. I never have any problems parking in Windsor House, Parklane hotel, and World Trade Center!

RC3, I know you are going to say I have IAS But IAS doesn't make the car PHYSICALLY smaller

Don't Know how narrow those 3 car parks, as I seldom cross habour.
But at my office's carpark, it sometimes needs as narrow as below 1" in between walls and the car's front, rear or door sides to get pass, F10 is just too big to do in many industrial buildings.

You got me right bro. YOU HAVE IAS! Hehe. But seriously IAS makes the F10 turning radius much smaller. Don't tell me that didn't help you for maneuvering on narrow driveways.

For me I used to only need one back up turn to park into my car park space with my 3er. Now I need to back up, forward turn and back up again to complete my parking. Beg I only need one back up turn if I have IAS.

Totally agree. Sometimes when I parked in those tight car park spaces. I need to climb to the passenger side to get off.

I tried driving with the front side cam on, could see the front wheel moving
left and right .. quite funny like its not real. If you have IAS can maybe see
the back wheel move, if the cam is close/zoom enough.

How far does the oem surround view see? can it see the front/back wheels?
I don't know what the housing looks like, the cam is on the bottom of right..
i took apart the cover and its just a piece of plastic in body color, like
bumper, so should be easy to fit the cam peek out from there.

I don't believe you have climbed over to the passenger side, RC are you a gymnast?

Chiver i was thinking 9 cam for parking, but now want to split to too smaller
screens and have 10. Left screen, 4 corners+front+rear(close distance),
right screen four side cams front/rear facing.

Jacky, I just take my time parking. Esp now my car looks a little nasty,
even the cops ask me why i make my car look like that, they mistake me
for a bad person. Today, i reverse on the street side slowly, an SL with a
dude and chick was just getting in and leaving. I just do my thing reversing
slowly, the guy is stuck leaving and got pissed (i could see in the mirror)
and honked a short one and had to reverse back to leave.. i think cuz the
chick stared at my (humble) car

Mlai, who knows, maybe i get lazy and just leave the cams taped there to the outside of the mirror .. like a beehive haha

1.Corner cam on top left, two fuzzy screens because 2 are pal ,2 ntsc
2.where i plan to install it. this one is 3.5inch screen. i plan to use a 5inch
one with 640/480 resolution, should fill out the space completely
3.enlarged rear left cam (actual view, 'ergonomic'). this is the cam to look at
for the curb rear left rim killer!
4.front left corner cam, supplements/realview pdc below 30cm
5.rear left rim cam installed in rear left wheel wheel. should fit with drop and
cornering (+i have skinnier tires) just enough space, and can see ground up
to rim/tire, thanks camper.

Will those cables invisible after actual installing?
If not, I would still suggest you do a lot practice, then get rib of it!

No, there won't be any wires, or the tape etc.
I practiced for over 10yrs .. but still suck, what to do?
I crashed my butt again parking, this time too busy looking at the screen.. completely ignoring the PDC deadtone. love these bumpers, they either snap or rebound to normal

Oh no, grim. Not again. Are you trying to destroy your rear bumper so you can get my black sapphire bumper?

Too busy looking at the screen and ignored the PDC. That defeats the purpose of the cam bro.

Yeah, RC, at this rate I will demolish my car before the cameras ever get in.. I also nearly rear-ended a taxi because i was looking at the screen while driving.
But if it works, when its all done, I believe it will be worth it .. i just hope these cams from china will last 10yrs, if they stop working after i have painstakingly installed them, i will scream

Strange enough, after you have 10 years experience?
Maybe you just going too fast when you parking?
Which was exactly what my bro in law did to my 320!, he did destroy rear bumper after 3 days receiving this car in brand new. And I have to replace that pumper at AK costing some 3.5k.
Try ultra slow when you parking
Good Luck to all our F10s when parking!

You know, from all these headaches and troubles to create "surround view" on the F10, the cost of the BMW surroundview option was not much......

Mlai, you win. The Oem looks amazing
Yeah, no $ as Rc says ..
The surround/parking view is much better than i expected, it can see up to both tires of the car using only one camera right? i dont know i can do that, they seem to use software to treat the image first before display, if i use a 200deg lens it will show the straight down too large, not enough the far edges.
Wow, the rearview has a 'curtain' display for the pdc? they should show that on the brochure so more ppl would get the option
Don't go playing with your rearcam in traffic now
Sideview i can place the camera on the nose, so potentially a little better
Finally blind spot camera, no Oe on that at least
Now tell us the full price, rear+surround/side view .. is/not standard on 550?
