When people ask... Do you tell them?
A lot of people are complimenting me on my car...and I like it, spent a lot of time picking all the options, plus worked hard to pay for it.
But everyone always asks the question... How much? I want to not be rude and say if you had to ask... Do you tell them? Or just give some comment like, it was enough.

In my 53 mos. of owning my car, only two people asked me how much it cost. One was a nosy jealous coworker (you get the type got her PMP and cheating on her husband likes BMWs) and my wife's aunt, who asked because she was envisioning how much it was going to cost me roughly per month based on interest, 36 mos., etc.
It's none of their business--ever have someone ask you what your salary is? I've had 2 as well--that's a no-win situation, especially if they've been there longer or are older. You say xxx, xxx, and they are happy you are making less, or upset you are making more an 15 yrs. younger with what they think is less experience. |

People ask me here and there. I tell them. I don't see what the big deal is...not like that information isn't available publicly available online. I mean just got to truecar or edmonds and u can get a fairly accurate idea. If they wanted to know, they could google it and find out. Not the same thing as asking what your salary is.
To me, it's the equivalent of asking how much did u pay for that iPad or Dell computer. No biggie here. Not sure why people take it so personally. |

Just say it's rude to ask or just start talking about something else-- that's how I deflect stupid questions or comments, lol.

i definitely when people ask me this because i find it rude. i never ask someone what they pay for their car unless its used or something or if they gloat about what good deal they got. hell if u buy a new or used car, i'm pretty aware with my knowledge of what you should have paid for it...

Sometimes I tell them, sometimes I just say "I got a pretty good deal" and that tells them in a nice way I don't want to say. More often than not though I tell them without them asking. I always buy used cars though. The last time I bought new (1993) I didn't really tell anybody, but my son was with me when I bought it so he knew and of course my wife.

You know what's kind of odd, the reverse, when someone lies about how much they paid, or the price. One senior exec in my co. butted-in when my friend and I were talking about a new car (I did my best, tried to steer her into at least a 328 as she got her VP title earlier in the year), and she suddenly was considering Lexus and Audi (she ultimately did go to the dark side, Ingolstadt). He says he just got the 8 cyl. Genesis, and it was 65k list, but he was such a good negotiator that he got it for 43k. I was thinking why would he even say that? Maybe an Equus can reach 60's, but not a Genesis....

Or how about when people ask if you leased your car? One of my former coworkers said he leased, and a vendor asked, why? That makes no sense, why did you do that, what were you thinking? That was a bit agressive, and put my coworker on the spot....

I tell people it cost $100,000. Most look at me funny and walk away.

So it could be that they love your car, and have it in the back of their mind that they could never afford it, just like I did... It could be that more than they want to judge you for buying it. (Regardles, you still always find someone that will do a "Humphhh... must be nice to spend that much on a car". You just need to be ready with a nice counter slap in the face for them. |

I feel awkward when people ask me, especially if they are older. I usually just say "a lot" but they always end up asking how much a lot is.
I'm pretty humble and thankful for what I have, heck I even feel awkard when people ask me what I drive...

They're not that expensive. They're a pretty penny to order from the dealer with everything you want but a few years later and people are picking up 335s for mid 20s. If people ask how much I tell them I picked it up CPO and it was a great deal.
