Comfort Access Remtote Not Detected?

So I searched and found plenty of threads about general issues with tint reducing comfort access range/consistency, but didn't see anything quite like the issue i'm experience now.

Aside from often not locking/unlocking ( which I attribute to the tint although it has gotten considerably worse over time), I will now get an error 1/10 times I start the car that the key is not detected and engine start is not possible. I've also gotten this with the motor already running, like it can't sense the remote anymore. keeps making me nervous while I'm driving that the system is going to screw itself up not sensing the key. Is this something anyone else has experienced/ would a simple battery change or key reprogram likely correct the situation? I don't care as much about the lock/unlocking issues, as I've had problems with keyless entry and tinted cars before. and of course the car waits until I have tons of shit in my hands and I'm trying to open the trunk or back door to not work.

thanks for the help!

Start with the simplest thing first. Change the battery in the key.

so if I just change the battery I won't need to have the remote reprogrammed correct?

LOL maybe I should have been more specific with my last comment. I meant that simply removing/replacing the battery from the remote won't require a reprogram, correct? like it won't need to be resynced to the car or anything.

Since replacing the car battery requires electronic "registration" by a dealer, that's not an unreasonable question.

But no - the remote battery is plug & play:

1. Buy a CR 2032 battery (ca. $3.00 at Radio Shack)
2. Remove the key from the CA fob by depressing the serrated area & pulling the key out.
3. Pry off battery cover.
4. Remove old battery - note the polarity.
5. Insert new battery - maintaining correct polarity.
6. Snap battery cover back in place.
7. Re-insert key.
8. Repeat every 2~3 years or as needed.

This is kind of a somewhat related question. Let say you start your car with the key inside your pocket. Walk away and a thief get in and drive off with your car. Does the engine shut off after certain distant from the key?

Sorry to be stealing your threat

it's funny you say that. i've always wondered the same thing myself. Like, if you have your fob in your pocket and were to be carjacked.

no worries about jacking the thread. I changed the battery today as per Tom's recommendation so we'll see if the problem is solved!

Doesn't the car tell you that the key battery is low? My sisters 650i chimes and a display comes up on the dash saying key battery low.

I believe the engine doesn't start if the fob is outside of the car.

No, but if the thief turns off the car, they cant restart it.

FYI, you can lock the car with the engine running should you have to walk away from it for whatever reason.

It seems to be somehat inconsistent.

With two CA BMW's, I found that one gave the warning icon when the battery would still function (albeit only 80% of the time) and the other gave no warning with the CA functioning only about 25% of the time.

grab a sledge hammer and beat the hell out of your car...jk
just change the battery in the remote. it should work then, if not just put the fob into the slot every once in a while. the manual states that if a key fob sits for over a year that it could lose it rechargeable power and it is recommended it be used twice a year if you have multiple keys. in the manual its page 27 and 28. hope this helps if not grab the sledge hammer

CA does not have rechargable battery in the 3 series

The battery could be low(key fob battery) and you would not get maximum range or function.
and it would not give you a warning message.
I wish the car would turn off when you walked away there have been cases
here were someone left the car running locked it and it idled the whole
day or till the gas ran out. Also anyone could break in and drive away.
This usually happens when you allow someone else to borrow the car
there is definitely a learning curve to operating the electronics especially with
CA.

Don't forget to charge your key here and there as well, CA is nice but you have to put the key in the ignition to charge it sometimes.

Comfort access key fobs are not rechargeable. Battery only. Makes no difference whether you put in ignition or not.
