Lemon: how hard is it to keep clean? The definitive, scientific answer!

Problem: to demonstrate how difficult it is to keep the lemon interior clean.

Conditions of experiment:
  • Period: March 1-29, 2007
  • Miles covered: +/-1,000 (1,568km)
  • Car's total mileage from new: 11,000 (18,000km)
  • Clothing worn: jeans, both black & blue
  • Weather conditions: dry, between 10 & 16°C
  • Heated seats: on 100% of the time (approximately 20% , 60% ▄ ▄ and 20% ▄ ▄ ▄)
The grime accumulated over the duration of the experiment (1,000 miles) can be seen on the top half of the seat. The bottom half shows how much dirt was removed after a 20-second wipe down with Mer Leather Cleaner & Conditioner (pictured).

An additional 20-30 seconds were subsequently needed on the driver's seat only to remove all traces of grime. The other seats were not so dirty: the front passenger seat required about 20 seconds on the side bolsters only. The back seats had scarcely been used.

QED

I can only assume so. Of course, all colours get equally dirty, it's just that it shows more on the lighter ones.

I am keen to have Lemon seats for my possible future car - a E93, but a bit worried about what our humid and pollution here doing to a nice convertible. Please post more leather cleaning experiences and photos of Lemon leather interior.
I found good result using Mothers 2-step leather cleaning but don't have a Lemon interior to test on yet but I will try.

Wonderful. Now you tell me!

This should be a common sense fact, but based on the plethora of "how hard is it..." questions I guess it's not.

I guess it would depend on what type of pollution and how it affects materials. Does it cause a black or dark stain? Does it cause a white bleached stain?

I'll find out today how easy it is to clean. When I took delivery there were several smudged areas in the seat from the grease monkies. I pointed it out to my CA who said he'd have that taken care of, but they didn't do a very good job.

Some things are just better done one's self.

I would say the lemon is more of an ivory colour, well ours is.
