My new 1M is going back to the dealers to have the exhaust checked out. There is a bad drone between 2200 and 2600 rpm. When I complained, the salesman took me up the road for a run in their demonstrator and it sounded fine. We then went the same route in mine and he immediately confirmed a problem so they're having a look at it on Monday 23rd. I'm having the 1200 mile service done while it's in.
Anyone else getting this drone? Last edited by johnsfb; 06-02-2011 at 03:30 AM.. |

One of the reviews recently mentioned it, take a look at the thread with all the review compilations. I want to say it was Jalopnik but I may be wrong.

It does it under light or gradual throttle load eg. holding 70mph up a gentle hill or incline. It's very loud from about 65 through to 78 mph. whether the M button is engaged or not Before that or after that It's fine and no problem at all. As I said, their demo doesn't do it so it should be fixable.

With the car cold grab the tips with both hands and push up, down, and side to side to see/hear if anything is hitting. That's if you want to even mess with it.
That noise could be good for 5 hp at the wheels.

One question though, HOW DO WE KNOW THAT THIS IS A PROBLEM? And not the way the vehicle should sound? Last edited by rapter; 05-17-2011 at 06:40 PM.. |

Hi Guys
Having had alot of sports cars ive had abit of drone on some of my cars. Sometimes it takes a few hundred miles for the new exhaust to coke up abit as the sound should gradually deepen with time and that resonance might lessen then. Picking up my car soon so will soon see. How many miles does the demo have on it? Of course if its obviously faulty then get them to sort it. Could be heat-shield resonance or CAT problem as they could well use racing CATs. Perhaps a good quality sound clip might be helpful guys |

The exhaust sound will change over the first 500 miles (mine did and the sound only got better). There is a bit of exhaust drone, but I never really traveled at that speed on our ED. I only heard it a couple of times and it only existed in 6th gear at low rpms. That being said I think the problem can be cured with some added weight to the exhaust.
