Unhappy Yet another turbo gone... :(

Two hours ago, loss of power, siren noise...
BMW assist just sent flatbed and took it away.
Need lift home, hire car coming Monday AM.
<47k miles, FSH, gutted.
Warranty but still a pisser.
After all that shit with the 320i and now this.

Shit news Westy I would personally be more concerned that Knights will be putting their incompetent paws all over my car!

Hope you get it sorted soon. Were you recovered, cos if so surely you are entitled to a hire car straight away? They usually send an Enterprise vehicle arranged by Mondial,

Hire company is Avis.
Out of hours so would have to go to nearest airport(!!!) to collect or wait till Monday.
Home now. Large glass of wine in hand....

.....great customer service again BMW

Collect from an airport or wait until Monday?! How exactly do you collect the hire car from the airport when they have just taken yours away on a flatbed!!

Do they not realise that you need a car because they have just recovered yours! Thick twats

That's sucks mate, any issue where you end without car is bound to shake you - but I would say the 2.0d does the most miles out of all the range and so is probably likely to be the most relaible

I Did 50k in an e46 320d and wife's 520d is upto 30k with no probs.
Oh hang on- 520d did have a turbo linkage issue but guess that isnt a serious issue like yours as she could still drive it.

Where abouts in Staffs are you, Westy? Do you manage to get some decent long drives on a regular basis?

Just to answer a few points:-
> The car is an April '07 reg.
> It had done approx 37k when I got it AUC last August as a replacement for rejecting the execrable 320i.
> It now has just under 47k on it, so its been doing around 12k / year.
>My commute is 20 miles each way, some clear roads, some town traffic.
>I drive to Wales at least six times a year, each trip runs up >250 miles and involves some motorway and fast 'A' road. I've done this trip three times so far in this car.

I'd think this was a fairly typical wear pattern and not one that could kill a turbo in the eight months / 10k miles I've had it.....?
Of course, as with any used car, you're not entirely sure what's gone on before you have it, which is why I always buy from a dealer with a warranty.

The car's already had three visits back to the dealer for an intermittent engine fault eventually sorted by changing the DDE.
I'm now wondering if the malfunctioning DDE has killed the turbo prematurely in some way...

I'm also thinking that after everything I've read on here and elsewhere, the 330d 'seems' to be the least reported for 'issues'....

Hmmm, I've used them for basic servicing in the past, but never for anything like this.
I suppose I'll find out how good (or not) they are this week....

You don't have any choice, either they've got a monopoly here, which isn't good news if they don't have a good rep...

Quick update - the dealer reckons its 'just the turbo' and should be ready tomorrow night.
Fingers crossed....

I aim to ask a few questions about possible causes of such a premature failure, though.

probably a mitsubushi turbo and premature failure can be down to crankcase breather not being changed.
Thats how i got 50/50 payment with bmw as its not classed as a servicable item but should be.

its ok the dealer saying its just the turbo but he is not paying for it as its over a grand if you have no warranty just for the turbo!

Sorry to hear that mate, can't offer technical advice but only sympathy as I am going through the problems with the 320i that you did - but you can't win! Good luck with it pal.

Is this crankcase breather easy to change? Where is it exactly?

Seems a good idea to change it if BMW can't be bothered!
