Stinky washer fluid

I've started getting a really bad smell through the vents each time I use the washer jets - I have put some disinfectant in the washer bottle but it's made no difference

What do I need to do?

I noticed the same recently, thought it was just me.

Possible answer is to empty the system, flush with fresh water once drained and then fill up with nicely scented screenwash.

Is it easy to take it all apart? Stripping out all the pipework etc?

The last screen wash I had stank, and I spilt some in the boot!

By flush I was implying spray washers until the bottle is dry, do the same again with fresh water, then fill up with nice screenwash and see if its solved.

The stink will be impregnated into the plastic washer tank.
The only way to get rid of it in my experience is either replacement of the tank or steam cleaning it.

It could be that you are short finals to a blocked washer filter. When mine packed up I had to remove pumps to clean out the filters on the pump pickup; they were full of nasty smelling bio-goo. You can find an explanation of what needs doing on the forum but I'll warn you that it us a PITA.

What do I need to do?
There might be two or three things working together or only one.

The washer might be leaking liquid in the ac vents and there might be "something" in the vents (like rat poo or something) which is releasing the smell when liquid mixes with it

The ac filter might be in need of a change as old filter release a "bad" smell sometimes

There might be something mixed in the washer liquid.

What I will recommend is that you waste any liquid that is in the washer bottle, get steam cleaning done on 1) the bottle 2) the pipes of the washer 3) ac vents and then fill with new liquid the washer bottle (or try water for a test?). I think this will solve your problem as it covers all bassis.

Thanks for the excellent information! Looks like a job for next week when I'm off, I literally nearly threw up this morning on the way to work when I washed the windscreen....!
