Will a 330i spring DIY be applicable to a 335i coupe?
I ordered a set of H&R Sport springs for my car, but my dealer and a local shop that does BMW work both want more to install and align the vehicle then I feel comfortable paying. I searched this forum and saw a DIY for a 330, but I do not know if my car is substantially different that the DIY will not be of any use.
Is $600 a good price to pay for a spring swap? Thanx. |

$600 is definitely not a good price for a spring install. That costs more than the springs themselves! Shops around here charge about $50-150 max for spring installs.
You can use the DIY for the 330i as a guideline. That's what we did when we installed the coilover on my 335i. |

Doh! Thats what I thought, until you say its a BMW then the price sky rockets! I still got it done for under $200, and I'm glad I didnt have to do it. It seems to be a but more complicated and time consuming compared to a Subaru. Tell the shop to charge you hourly, they should quote you no more than 2.5 hours. 2.5 x $80 = $200max |

That seems a bit on the low side, suspension is not easy to work with...a good price for a good spring install would be 200-250.... I used to charge people 200 to install their springs on hondas, and 150 for BMW's... couple 330Ci's and M3's...once you get the basic of the installation, all cars are similar...it's just a matter of common sense and research...

Suspension is really one of the basic, IMO, as far as installing goes. Tuning the suspension, ie road race align can requirement more knowledge. |

Well we think it is easy because we have worked on it...but to the individuals who are not so mechanically inclined and lacking the proper tools, this can be quite overwhelming...

^If you don't even have the proper tools, I would seriously just go look for a shop. If you're buying the tools just for this one install, it won't be worth it. If you're planning on doing future installs yourself, that is worth considering.

I was thinking of getting loaner tools from AutoZone, but if an average shop can do the swap, I may look into that route. The only thing specific is the wheel alignment. I know the NTB near my home won't touch BMWs.
Thanx for the info. |
