Sheesh! Anyone have Wurth Silver Paint?

So I finally decide to DIY repair the curb rash on my 162s, and I started shopping for what I need. Most important is the Wurth German Alloy Silver Wheel Lacquer paint, which matches the silver for our alloy wheels.

Unfortunately, it is OUT OF STOCK EVERYWHERE. Apparently, Wurth issued a nation-wide recall on this item in October 2006 because the nozzle gets clogged easily, and it still is not stocked anywhere. See http://classic-motoring.stores.yahoo...usilasppa.html for example (see the note at the bottom of the page).

Does anyone in the DC area have any of this paint from the pre-recall days? I will buy it from you, and I can drive anywhere in the area to pick it up.

you may want to PM SteveMD, he repaired his wheel and have kept hi PM to me for future reference. He may still have a few paint left, or know another source. Good luck

You can get Bondo brand red putty at any Pep Boys or similar store.

You also need sanding primer - about $4.

For sanding, I used 400 grit to initially clean up the scratch. Then put the bondo on to fill in the scratch. I then used 800 with water to sand down the bondo.

The wheel should now be the right shape.

Tape up the wheel - I covered the tire only since I wanted no masking lines. And obviously the paint. I actually covered the whole car with the car cover from my Corvette.

Carefully apply the primer - just a few passes will work. Immediately use thinners to remove overspray from your wheel.

Give it a couple of hours.

Wet sand again with 800. You should be now ready to apply the Wurth silver. Again, just a couple of passes should do. Wipe off excess.

Let it dry for at least 12 hours. Then apply another coat. 12 hours. Then apply the clear.

That's it. I then used 2000 grit to 'polish it up' along with some liquid polish.

Good luck.

You mean www.autopia-carcare.com, and they don't have it in stock, either. Adding it to your cart gives you the following message, presumably because of the recall: "The Wurth German Alloy Silver Wheel Lacquer is not currently available. Please contact us for availability of this item."

Would you be interested in selling your partially used paint? Seriously, I don't need much.

Ah ha -- so this place says "out of stock until 4/1/07." I can live with that, assuming they'll actually get it in stock then:
http://www.goodspeedmotoring.com/?pa...el%20Paint

If anyone in the DC area has any they'd be willing to part with in the meantime, though, I'd love to get my 162s done earlier rather than later.

Has anyone found a paint that matches as well as the Wurth paint? I tried my TIAG touch up paint and its close but not an exact match. I contacted several online auto shops and nobody knows if they will actually be getting Wurth silver back in stock. It's summer rim time and I'd like to get mine looking the best they can.

They advertise Einszett (1Z) Silber paint as a match for Wurth Silver Metallic, but I've read some posts that say the 1Z is a shade darker and does not match well.

Here's the 1Z: http://www.pelicanparts.com/catalog/...g10.htm#item45

Thanks for the link. I'm going to wait until the second week of April to see if anyone actually hears if they're going to get the Wurth back in stock. If not I may have to take a chance on the Einszett.

I ended up buying the Dupli-Color Silver Wheel Paint. I have not used it yet, but Josh49 claims a close match to the OEM wheel paint. You can find this paint in most Auto-Zone or Pep Boys stores.

Based on my schedule, I may not be able to get to my wheels until the week after Easter.

See this thread: http://www.e90post.com/forums/showth...590#post801590

EDIT: I've spent some time Googling "Wurth Einszett silver wheel paint" and variations on that theme, and I've found a few interesting threads. I was toying with the idea of Einszett, but I have read more threads that says it's a little darker than the OEM shade. Another interesting thing I found is that the Wurth silver flakes apparently are a slightly different size than BMW OEM, so it is not an "exact" match, but it's very very close. I plan to stick with the Dupli-Color for now until the Wurth is available again.

Shim, any interest in selling it? Although I would not be surprised if you have one of the defective cans that clogs up (I've read "every can I tried was unusable within three seconds").

Well, I wanted to fix one of my wheels eventually, but never got around to doing it. I guess I could sell it to you. I'm not sure when I bought it, it was a while back. Do you know which batch is defective?

They began the recall in October last year, but I saw posts from July where someone reported having lots of trouble with the paint. So maybe July 2006 or so, at the latest, and probably cans from earlier than that. I guess they still haven't fixed the problem. See this thread: http://forums.bimmerforums.com/forum...d.php?t=560220

"wurth is [bleep], i recently painted my wheels and recieved 3 or 4 defective cans. get Einszett Sibler Spray from pelican parts, the match is pretty good, no complaints here." (July 6, 2006)

Still, if you'd be willing to sell it, I'll not only pay full price for the can, but I'll buy you a new can once they start selling it again (as PSUBALL10 said, the expected date is now July 1st). If it clogs on me, I'll just use the Dupli-Color and I'll be ordering myself a new can once they sell it, anyway. PM me and let me know. On the other hand, if you want to hold onto the can, I understand and I'll just go with the Dupli-Color for now.

I checked my invoice, I bought the can in August 2006, so I don't know. I'll just give you my can since I probably won't get around to it anytime soon, and you can buy me one whenever they restock it. You don't have to pay two-fold for a can that might clog.
