changing paint colors
yes, sounds strange, but i'm contemplating on having my car painted brilliant black. wondering if anyone has done this and whether they were satisfied with the results. i don't think the BMW dealer could handle this but i'm sure there are shops in Northern NJ that could do a good job. Any thoughts or recommendations would be greatly appreciated.

1. It will kill your re-sale value, so plan on keeping it.
2. Find a VERY (take your time) reputable shop, and if your car isn't already a different color black, make sure they take the entire car apart to get every place there is paint (pull the engine, door jams, etc) 3. It will cost upwards of $6-$10 grand for a good job, but if you get someone good to do it and do it properly, you should be very satisified. 4. It will take a long time, so have a backup car. |

Not worth it IMO. To truly do a good paint job and get under the hood, under the trunk lid, on the door frames, etc etc etc, it will cost a ton of $$$$. And kill your resale value.
Live with it or sell it & buy a different car. |

Not only will it kill your resale value, it also will not be nearly as good as the factory unless you have a shop strip it and repaint it, including door jams, undersurfaces and so forth, figure $5G for a cheap job, $10G for a good job.
All I can say is, its nightmare waiting to happen, and you will only have yourself to blame. |

Whatever you do, PLEASE dont' go to the dealer for paint/bodywork - that always baffles me.
If you want, just ask the dealer what body shop they use and go straight there. No need to have the dealer drop the car off for you, pick it back up for you and add 10% to the bill for you. |

Vinyl wrap isn't the same as a paint job though. Gloss won't be as deep.

for that much money, sell your car and get a diff. colored car... you would save a lot of money and hassle that way. ever looked into Black sapphire metallic? I have that in my 335i E90 and I love it... its a deep black with a little bit of sparkle for depth. try to locate one at a dealer lot and check it out. if you like black, you wont be disappointed.

my daughter took a rock and drew on my wife's 1-yr old car. on every panel except the top (she couldn't reach it). cost me $500 to repaint the whole car. cost the insurance company another $4500+. I used a body shop. Turns out it's the same body shop my dealer uses. It was easy since the shop is in the city I work in. Took them a week.
